🌼 Meet the Team – Week 6
This week, we’re honoured to introduce Bríd Egan, one of our longest-serving and deeply valued volunteers. Bríd facilitates our Closed Group for recently bereaved parents and supports many of our Parent Support Meetings. Her compassion, experience, and dedication have brought comfort to countless families navigating the heartbreak of baby loss.
💛 Bríd Egan - Parent Support Volunteer
Bríd has been connected with the charity since 1998, when she and her husband Pat sought support following the death of their baby boy, Liam. In the years that followed, she completed volunteer training and has since become a pillar of support within our community.
A retired primary school teacher, Bríd is also a mother to Liam’s two older brothers, Ciarán and Oisín. Her personal experience of loss shapes her work, bringing empathy and understanding to every parent she meets. She facilitates our Closed Group for recently bereaved parents alongside Peter O’Hanlon, as well as supporting Parent Support Meetings.
Bríd describes the charity as a lifeline during an “unspeakably painful time,” and it was through meeting other bereaved parents that she found relief and understanding. In honour of Liam, she chose to give back, supporting others as they begin their own journey through grief.
For Bríd, volunteering is about helping parents feel less alone in their darkest moments. She gently reassures families that, although the pain is overwhelming in the early days, it will soften with time—and that their babies will always be remembered with love.
She is especially moved by the charity’s remembrance events, including the Christmas Service and ceremonies in Glasnevin Cemetery. One moment that stays with her is seeing the altar lit with candles as “Silent Night” is sung—a powerful reflection of love, loss, and remembrance.
Bríd also speaks passionately about how baby loss is often misunderstood:
“Many people minimise the effect baby loss has on parents, thinking that because the baby was small, the loss is small. Nothing could be further from the truth—it is a life-changing experience.”
She considers it a privilege to hear and hold the stories of the babies shared with her, and treasures the friendships formed through her involvement with the charity. She also fondly remembers Ron Smith-Murphy, the first volunteer she met, whose kindness and support during those early days made a lasting impact.
Bríd’s compassion, wisdom, and dedication continue to make a profound difference to bereaved families. We are so grateful to have her as part of our team. 💛
