Wakefield Civic Society

Wakefield Civic Society Wakefield Civic Society - an organisation dedicated to making Wakefield a better place in which to live, work or relax.

The Society is a charity (236034) run by volunteers. Membership is open to individuals and organisations who share our aims. We regularly review planning applications made to the Council and make comments or raise objections to planned developments where we feel that the proposals do not represent the best interests of Wakefield. From time to time, and working with other organisations where approp

riate, we embark on projects to improve buildings or open spaces within the City. To recognise and reward development and environmental schemes of high quality, we run an annual Design Awards competition. We also have a Blue Plaque scheme which currently features 32 blue plaques in and around Wakefield. For our members, we offer a programme of summer excursions (for which there is a charge) and a programme of winter lectures (to which entrance is usually free), social events and a monthly dining club.

Today, members of Wakefield Civic Society and Wakefield Historical Society enjoyed a visit to Stamford Bridge and Sledmere House. At Stamford Bridge, we visited Platform 66 at the old station to see the Stamford Bridge Tapestry telling of the battle of 1066.
