Wakefield Civic Society - an organisation dedicated to making Wakefield a better place in which to live, work or relax.

The Society is a charity (236034) run by volunteers. Membership is open to individuals and organisations who share our aims. We regularly review planning applications made to the Council and make comments or raise objections to planned developments where we feel that the proposals do not represent the best interests of Wakefield. From time to time, and working with other organisations where appropriate, we embark on projects to improve buildings or open spaces within the City. To recognise and reward development and environmental schemes of high quality, we run an annual Design Awards competition. We also have a Blue Plaque scheme which currently features 32 blue plaques in and around Wakefield. For our members, we offer a programme of summer excursions (for which there is a charge) and a programme of winter lectures (to which entrance is usually free), social events and a monthly dining club.

Yesterday, we were pleased to show members of the The Victorian Society - West Yorkshire around the city. Starting from the Garden at The Hepworth Wakefield, we first visited Tileyard North before walking up through the city centre where members were given time for lunch. After that, we visited the civic quarter to look at some of the recent city centre developments. All in all, despite a rather blustery afternoon (that turned somewhat wet - but that's what umbrellas are for!), everyone had a very enjoyable visit. Thank you to Civic Society committee member Judith Sgarbi for taking the photos.

Tonight, with Wakefield Civic Society was a fascinating talk by author & food historian, Peter Brears FSA about a new book he has compiled with Michael J. Rochford FSA. The book, Bucklers' Yorkshire Buildings, The Architectural & Topographical Drawings of John Buckler & John Chessell of 1804-1820 shows many illustrations of buildings that no longer or were substantially altered & in some examples they are all that is known about the building. Some of the illustrations discussed in the talk tonight were in Wakefield. These included, All Saints (Cathedral), St. John's Church, The Market Cross, Old Heath Hall, The Six Chimneys & the Chantry Chapel of St. Mary the Virgin.
