Wakefield Community Gospel Choir

WCGC is a secular choir performing the best of soul pop and gospel. The choir’s repertoire is varied and unexpected –ranging from upbeat pop and soul, blended with examples of classic gospel. WCGC is a choir that draws on the tradition of gospel singing but produces music that is contemporary and relevant to modern day tastes. We create music that appeals to people from all backgrounds and ages an

d aim for maximum inclusivity. Originally set up in 1997, the choir has been going strong under the musical direction of the exceptionally talented Rachel Bradley, who has performed alongside musical greats. The choir is being launched onto the next level as it expands and develops the range of performance opportunities, alongside a new programme of vocal skills workshops which we hope to become accredited courses in the future. Though the choirs vocal style is deeply rooted in gospel, we endeavour to take this singing style to a range of musical genres. Quintessential soulful classics like Sam Cookes "A change is gonna come" are performed alongside vintage pop like James Taylor's "How sweet it is" and Queen's "Somebody to love". We've also added a little bit of funk for good measure with songs like Earth Wind and Fires "September" and we are not scared to explore contemporary pop music either and regularly perform songs such as Emeli Sandé's "Heaven" and Gnarls Barkley's "Crazy". Traditional gospel songs such as "Wade in the water" still feature in our sets along with contemporary urban gospel songs like John Legend's "It don't have to change".
