It may be tempting to cool off in or near the water during a heatwave, but please take extra care when doing so ☀️

Swim at a lifeguarded beach where possible 🏖️

Take notice of the beach flags and safety signs 🚩

Stay within your limits when in the water 🌊

Never enter the water after drinking alcohol ❌

If you get into trouble, Float to Live 🛟

In an emergency at the coast, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.

🌊 Drowning Prevention Week: Respect Cold Water 🌊
Many people are surprised to learn that water temperatures in our seas, rivers and lakes can remain cold, even on the hottest summer days.
In the UK, sea temperatures typically range from around 7-10°C in winter to 16-19°C in summer, while rivers and lakes can often be even colder.
Water temperatures of 15°C and below are considered extremely cold water and can trigger a dangerous response known as cold water shock.
If you suddenly jump into cold water, your body may:
⚠️ Gasp involuntarily
⚠️ Hyperventilate
⚠️ Experience a rapid increase in heart rate and blood pressure
⚠️ Struggle to control breathing
⚠️ Panic
This is why we always encourage swimmers to:
💙 Enter the water gradually
💙 Allow your body time to acclimatise
💙 Focus on slow, controlled breathing
💙 Never jump straight into cold water
💙 Take extra care if you’re unfamiliar with the location
The first minute or two is often the most important. Once your breathing is under control, you’re in a much better position to make safe decisions.
The water may look inviting, especially during warm weather, but cold water deserves respect.
Take your time.
Acclimatise carefully.
Breathe.
Enjoy the water safely. 🌊

☑️ Always keep an eye on the tides and winds.
☑️ Don't get caught out by the incoming tide. Tidal cut offs are quite common on our local beaches which can result in the RNLI and Coastguard being called out to rescue the unwary.
