HISTORY OF THE SEA CADETS

The Sea Cadet Corps (SCC) is a UK national youth organisation sponsored by the Royal Navy and open to young people across the Commonwealth. Sea Cadets date back to the Crimean War when sailors returning home from the campaign in 1856 formed Naval Lads’ Brigades to help those orphans, created by the conflict, who ended up on the back streets of sea ports. By 1899, Sea Cad

ets received Royal recognition when Queen Victoria presented the Windsor unit with £10 for uniforms – an event now known as the birthday of the Sea Cadets – celebrated on June 25th. In 1919 the Admiralty officially recognised the 34 brigades and changed the name to the Navy League Sea Cadet Corps. Lord Nuffield’s (founder of Morris Motors) donation of £50,000 enabled the Sea Cadets to expand and by the outbreak of the Second World War there were 100 units in the UK supporting 10,000 cadets with training in seafaring skills. As the war took hold the Navy League purchased an old sailing vessel – TS (Training Ship) Bounty – on which the ‘Bounty Boys’, as they became known, undertook pre-service training with 1000’s going on to active service. In recognition of the contribution that these brave young people made to the war effort, officers of the Sea Cadets still wear the wavy lace insignia of the wartime Royal Navy Volunteer Reserve. The Admiralty was so impressed that it took over the training and in 1942, with King George VI as Admiral; the Movement adopted Sea Cadet Corps as its name. In the same year, the Girls Nautical Training Corps was formed, this ceased to exist as a separate body in 1980 when the admission of girls into the Sea Cadet Corps was approved. In 1955 a Marine Cadet section was formed within the Sea Cadet Corps. Their training, whilst essentially similar to the Sea Cadets, includes activities like camouflage and concealment. HISTORY OF HMS RALEIGH

HMS Raleigh was commissioned in 9 January 1940 as the modern-day basic training facility of the Royal Navy in Torpoint, Cornwall. It is spread over several square miles, has damage control simulators, fire-fighting training facilities, as well as a permanently moored training ship, the former HMS Brecon. Its principal function is the delivery of both New Entry Training & Basic Training. the majority of which visiting Sea Cadets are given access to.

📣 We’ve got some exciting news….. 📣

🎉 NEW APPOINTMENT 🎉

We’d like to welcome our new Training Centre Support Officer, That’s TCSO for short / XO Youth Training SCTC Raleigh.
Lt Cdr(SCC) Neil Gregory RNR who joins us with 32years Adult Volunteering experience & was even a Cadet himself many moons ago.
Neil has come from working as a manager in the NHS for the last 16 years and brings with him a whole lot of experience, knowledge and perspective.

Neil will be familiar to many of you, but we’d thought we ask him a few questions to get to know him a bit better…..

🔹 Can you tell us a little bit about Who you are?

I am 49 years old and have been in cadets for 37 years right from a cadet through to a CFAV.
Throughout that time I’ve held roles of boats officer, UTO, 1st Lt/XO at Exmouth and Exeter units and commanding officer of Exmouth unit. DTO, ADO, DDO and Devon District officer for the past 4 years. Previously worked in the NHS for 16 years.

🔹 Where are you from?
Born in Exeter, I currently live in Exmouth.

🔹 What hobbies/interests do you have? 🔍
I love nothing more than getting out in my boat when time allows or walking on the moors. Spending time with family and friends is really important to me.

🔹 Where is your favourite place to visit? 🌎

It’s got to be Tenerife for some sun! If in the UK, then anywhere on the Cornish coast.

🔹 An interesting fact about you? 🤔

I met the late queen and prince Phillip in 2010 at cadet 150. I also attended the wedding ceremony of Prince Harry and Megan at Windsor castle.

🔹 Can you give a few words about taking on the new role? 📝

I’m Looking forward to assisting delivery of a high-quality experience for all RN Cadet Forces and the other users of the centre and to continue developing my skills and qualifications to assist with this. I look forward to meeting and welcoming you all to the centre.

🍀🎉 We’d like you all to join us in wishing Neil Congratulations and Luck in his new role 🎉🍀

02/03/2026

It is with deepest sorrow that we share in the sad news that Lt (SCC) Jacky de Bruyne RNR, former Sea Cadet Training Centre - Vigilant Squadron member and latterly CO of Torpoint SCC & Staff member at Ilfracombe SCC passed away this morning. She was surrounded by loved ones whom are in our thoughts at this difficult time.

Jacky was a stalwart of the Sea Cadets Corps, and formerly the Girls’ Nautical Training Corps, for over 40 years.
She has been a role model and valued member of South West Area, Southern Area & Offshore during this time. Jacky was a commited member of staff across four decades in many different roles including, District staff, Commanding Officer of Cowes, Barnstaple and Torpoint Units, latterly ending up at Ilfracombe Unit as unit staff sharer of knowledge, all things SCC.

Jacky started her journey in the organisation as a Civilian Instructor, and then as a Senior Rate, within the Ilfracombe Girls’ Nautical Training Corps, prior to its merger with the Sea Cadets.
She subsequently commissioned as an officer within the SCC. Jacky being the dedicated and passionate volunteer, volunteered wherever her adventures and life’s journey took her. Including with units in Somerset & Dorset, Devon & Cornwall, along with others in Southern Area.

Lt De Bruyne had also served as the Executive Officer for the Devonport Navy Days events over many years.

Jacky served as the Executive Officer of the Youth Training Centre (Vigilant Squadron) at HMS RALEIGH during the 2000s, where she guided various CO’s of the training centre and all of its instructional staff. Oversaw the training of thousands of cadets and Adult Volunteers from across the country from the whole of the RN Cadet Force Family, She also worked for the MSSC as a member of the offshore relief crew of the TS ROYALIST tall ship, keeping everyone in check as the Coxswain and other roles.

Jacky later became the Commanding Officer of Cowes Unit in the 2010s. Guiding the unit and community through some challenging times, including the closure of the unit building and a complete demolition and rebuilding project over many years.
Jacky was a leading figure in rebuilding Cowes Unit, resulting in the fantastic premises they have today. Being the legend that she was, ran a temporary unit from the boot of her car in a local church hall in the meantime. (Later doing a similar thing for Torpoint Unit during the Covid19 Pandemic, whilst displaced from their unit premises)

Following a move to Torpoint in 2018 she joined a very new Torpoint Sea Cadet unit which had just opened inside the wire at HMS RALEIGH. Jacky joined the unit at a challenging time, with just seven cadets on the books and some staffing challenges. Jacky brought with her a wealth of experience, A whole heap of tenacity, knowledge, determination, passion, enthusiasm and effervescent energy to help TS Ramehead drive forward. Jacky built the foundations and provided guidance, counsel and mentoring to the staff and many cadets…. Resulting and contributing to the successful unit and community it is today!

It would be remiss for us not to comment on the may lives that Jacky has undoubtedly touched throughout her many years in the SCC. Hundreds and thousands, of cadets and adults who have been positively affected by her selfless work.
Jacky has been a friend, mentor, support and cheerleader for many of us personally both as Staff and as a Cadet.
Jacky was the pure definition of every single Core Value and so much more, As I told her on many occasion when she had given me a quick pep talk and that infectious laugh….. “They don’t make ‘em like you anymore!”

Throughout these difficult and sad times we share our thoughts and prayers to Jacky’s many Friends and Family. To All those at TS Ramehead past and present and to those at Ilfracombe SCC Unit.

Fair winds Ma’am and as another dear friend and colleague of ours would have said, thanks for the memories.

Lt (SCC) Jacquelyn de Bruyne RNR, May you rest in peace.
