Rame Gig Club

Rame Gig Club Based at Cawsand in Cornwall, our inclusive club rows Cornish Pilot Gigs. The village has a history steeped in Fishing and Smuggling.

We welcome everyone and hope that you will join us for some fun on the water or in our community fitness suite Our Story
The location is stunning with views to the Mew Stone, Drake's Island and The Breakwater and, of course, when out on the water views of the villages of Kingsand and Cawsand, Fort Picklecombe, Penlee and Rame Head can be enjoyed. We have mens, ladies, junior, veterans and super ve

terans crews and attend regattas all over Devon and Cornwall. Our qualified coaches teach technique and fitness and we row most of the year. The club's fitness suite can be used throughout and not only by rowers but the whole community. Location
Rame Gig Club is located in its own dedicated building within the square of the beautiful historic fishing village of Cawsand on the Rame Peninsula. History
Rame Gig Club was formed in1992 by former members of the Cawsand Bay Rowing Club and others, in order to revive and promote the sport of competitive rowing in the Rame Peninsula. Principally to utilise our valuable natural resources – the sea, a mild climate and also to provide a healthy, athletic pastime for the members of our community – young and old. Our first gig, the Spirit of Rame was built by Jimmy Donne and Son of St Budeaux, Plymouth; she was the first to be made outside of Cornwall. The second build was the Minnadhu, this is a Cornish word meaning “black rock”. It was named after one of the fields overlooking Cawsand and Kingsand Bay; the Minnadhu is probably out fastest boat and very comfortable to row in. Jim Currah built her in 1994. Finally, Jim and his son Dave Currah built the Penlee Point, in 2004. In 2015 we acquired our first GRP gig, the Maker Wave, as she isn’t of traditional construction she is used primarily for training. In 2018 the Tamar Valley Winter League was established which is limited to GRP gigs only. In 2018 Rame decided to update their fleet which saw the Spirit of Rame being sold onto the a new starter club, Combwich based in Somerset. A new gig was commissioned from Harry Poulson of Poulson Boats retaining the name of “Spirit of Rame” it was blessed and launched April 2019. With a thriving junior section which will hopefully see many stay on into the adult squads, the new boat will certainly provide Rame Gig Club the tools to thrive in this fast growing, highly competitive sport where clubs are stepping up the level year on year.
