Venture Trust

Venture Trust Supporting people across Scotland through life-changing outdoor based personal development programmes and an outdoor therapy service.

We are a registered charity in Scotland (Number SC038932). Venture Trust helps people going through difficult circumstances to make positive changes in their lives. We run intensive personal development programmes using wilderness settings and activities, designed to support participants to build their confidence, learn new skills, spend time with others from similar backgrounds, and think about t

he future. Venture Trust helps people recognise what they need to change; then gives them the confidence, motivation and life tools they need to make those changes. Our programmes give participants time and space in a wilderness setting, far away from the pressures of home, in which they are set physical, emotional and social challenges. These challenges, combined with long term support from our outreach workers, help participants to develop the skills they need to find a job, go back into education, increase their stability and develop more positive relationships with those around them.

In a new thought piece, Venture Trust Managing Director Gavin Sinclair reflects on Scotland’s Programme for Government and its increasing focus on tackling misogyny and what that could mean for how we engage men and boys.

With social media, online personalities and peer groups helping shape ideas about masculinity, relationships and power, Gavin explores the importance of creating opportunities for young men to question those influences, think for themselves and develop healthier ideas about strength and belonging.

And he considers where Venture Trust and the outdoors can contribute – creating the conditions for challenge, trusted relationships, reflection and different thinking.

Nine women recently came together for our latest Next Steps wilderness journey, spending time around Loch Tay in Perthshire.

Across the journey there was passion, compassion, a few tears and plenty of smiles. The group took time for meditation, set and achieved daily goals, faced fears and supported one another through the challenges along the way.

Reflecting on the experience, one of our team said:

“It was a privilege to be a positive part in the lives of the nine magnificent women who engaged with our course.”

Our Next Steps programme supports women facing challenging life circumstances to build confidence, develop resilience and make positive changes in their lives. Through one-to-one support, groupwork and a wilderness journey, participants are supported to face challenges, reflect on their experiences, recognise their strengths and work towards goals that matter to them.

Seven participants have just returned from our latest wilderness journey, taking them from the Ardverikie Estate to the shores of Loch Arkaig.

The journey began with a couple of days based at Ardverikie, including a trip to the climbing crags at Kingussie where participants challenged themselves and pushed beyond their comfort zones.

From there, the group headed west and took to the water for a multi-day canoe journey along Loch Arkaig. Over three days they paddled the length of the loch, finding wild campsites along the southern shore – with some incredible views along the way (and, thankfully, enough of a breeze to keep the midges away!).

Alongside the climbing, paddling and camping, there was time to explore themes including problem solving, dealing with change and challenge, understanding our needs and thinking about how learning from the journey can be carried forward into everyday life.

All seven participants completed the journey, supporting one another along the way before finishing with some well-earned comforts at Craggan Bunkhouse on Loch Tay. 👏

🎉 We’re delighted to share some good news!

Venture Trust has received a £5,000 grant from the Scottish Children’s Lottery to support our work with young people.

The funding will help us create meaningful opportunities for young people to spend time outdoors, try new things, connect with others and take on challenges in a supportive environment – creating space for personal growth and positive change.

A huge thank you to Scottish Children's Lottery and The Jackpot Community Trust, and to Scottish Children’s Lottery players whose support makes funding like this possible. 💚

We’re looking forward to sharing the difference this funding makes for the young people we work alongside.

Seven participants recently headed out on one of our justice wilderness journeys, travelling through the stunning landscapes around Loch Tummel and Loch Rannoch.

Over the course of the journey, the group hiked with loaded packs, wild camped beside rivers and lochs and paddled across Loch Rannoch, before spending a night at a secluded beach camp, that became a real highlight moment for the group.

But the journey is about much more than the miles travelled. Along the way, participants explored relationships, emotions, triggers and their own needs, while learning to support one another through challenge. From sharing the weight of heavy packs to setting up camp and cooking together, the group created a strong sense of trust and belonging.

The journey ended at Glassie Farm, where participants reflected on what they'd achieved and worked on action plans to take their learning forward into everyday life.

Our Justice Personal Development programmes support people involved in the justice system to make positive changes in their lives, combining individual support, groupwork and wilderness journeys like this one.

💚 Thank you to the Garfield Weston Foundation for supporting our work and helping make experiences like this possible.

🌿 Do you know a veteran who could benefit from Outdoor Therapy?

Life after military service can bring challenges that aren't always easy to talk about. Sometimes, the right support starts with a conversation outdoors.

Venture Trust's Outdoor Therapy service combines professional, one-to-one counselling with the restorative benefits of spending time in nature, creating a safe and supportive space for veterans to improve their mental health and wellbeing.

If you work with veterans, support veterans, or know someone who may benefit, we'd love to hear from you.

The service is free and available to veterans aged 16 and over living in Greater Glasgow.

After taking part in a Venture Trust programme in 2024, Kirsty recently caught up with us to reflect on the impact the experience has had on her life. In this inspiring blog, she shares how spending time outdoors, building trusted relationships and challenging herself helped her grow in confidence, develop a more positive outlook and continue moving forward long after completing the programme.
