Book now: Relational Care in the Context of Suicidal Thinking and Suicidal Crisis

Do you provide support to people experiencing suicidal thinking and suicidal crisis? Are you interested in relational approaches to care?

We are offering two opportunities to join us at this one-day workshop:
Monday 7 December in Glasgow and Wednesday 9 December in Aberdeen

The workshop aims to:
✅ Enable open dialogue about the nature of su***de
✅ Improve understanding of psychodynamic concepts that help make sense of suicidality
✅ Improve understanding of the relationship between suicidality and self-harm
✅ Encourage relational engagement with those who are suicidal and self-harming
✅ Enhance understanding of the impact of su***de on the bereaved, and on professionals and systems.

We will be joined by: Dr Rachel Gibbons, who has worked as a consultant psychiatrist in the NHS, privately, and in national leadership roles, and Dr Jo O’Reilly, consultant psychiatrist in medical psychotherapy.

The workshop is aimed primarily at community and primary care nurses who work with people experiencing suicidal thinking and suicidal crisis. It will also be of interest to other community and primary care professional groups where they have responsibility to provide support and assessment, and an interest in relational approaches to care, in the context of suicidal thinking and suicidal crisis.

📣 Neighbourhood Health: Community Engagement Awards

The Burdett Trust for Nursing is offering small grants to support nurse-led, co-produced initiatives that work with underserved or minoritised communities.

The awards can help develop existing projects or launch new work that listens to community voices, tackles health inequalities and helps shape services around local needs.

Successful applicants will also join a community of practice to share learning and support.

Using Self-Care Week to Support Better Health (16–22 November)

Self-Care Week is a key occasion to champion consistent, accessible self-care support across local pathways.

The Self-Care Forum emphasises that helping people help themselves doesn’t have to be complicated — but it does need to be consistent and frequent. Nurses and health visitors have long been at the forefront of supporting self-care, and awareness campaigns like Self-Care Week create ideal opportunities for health professionals to promote positive health behaviours.

Evidence from the Self-Care Forum and Imperial College London’s SCARU shows that people want more control over their health but need support to do so. Small, visible actions during Self-Care Week can lead to lasting behavioural change.

The annual Michelle Cox RCN Foundation Anti-Racism Award is open.

This is an annual award of up to £2,500 which will support a nurse or midwifery-led project aiming to oppose racism and promote racial equality within nursing and midwifery. Applications are welcome from nurses and midwives across the UK however, they must be an RCN Foundation member.

The Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies, at the University of Edinburgh, is hosting a two-day conference this September.

Empathy and compassion in One Health conference: Perspectives across disciplines, species and ecosystems
Dovecot Studios, 28-29 September 2026

This multidisciplinary conference will bring together leading researchers, educators, and innovators in human and animal healthcare and allied disciplines to share research and establish new collaborations. It's aimed at academics, practitioners and educators who are interested in empathy and compassion in human, animal, and planetary health.

This conference is the inaugural event of the Edinburgh Empathy Place, an initiative of the Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies, and is part of the Edinburgh Medical School’s 300th year anniversary celebrations.

Evaluation of QNIS Complexity and Adversity Network (CAN) programme published

An evaluation of QNIS’ 2023 Complexity and Adversity Network (CAN) programme has been published in the international Journal of Continuing Education in the Health Professions.

The evaluation demonstrated the value and impact of teaching relationally focused approaches to care for community nurses and midwives working in contexts of poverty and adversity.

The QNIS programme generated statistically significant increases in compassion satisfaction, self-awareness, and knowledge.
