Scotland’s international nature commitments depend on effective deer management, but much of the cost currently falls on private estates.

As deer numbers are reduced, the traditional stalking model that has historically provided estates with a source of income to help offset this cost is becoming increasingly difficult to sustain.

So who should pay for deer management? Our latest story from The Fiadh Project offers an intriguing solution.

🐂 Eat. Trample. Poo. Repeat.

It might not sound like sophisticated ecosystem engineering, but large herbivores can be very good at their jobs.

'Wild living' cattle and horses graze, browse, trample and move through a landscape, creating disturbance and variety. They open up space for different plants and habitats, helping nature become richer and more dynamic.

It’s why we want to see more ‘wilder grazing’ across Scotland: using appropriate species at low densities to put some of these natural processes back to work.

🐂 Meet Scotland’s newest ecosystem engineers.

Twelve rare Droimeann cattle have arrived at Ardtornish – the first herd of this ancient Irish breed to be established in Scotland in centuries.

And they have a job to do.

By grazing, browsing and trampling across woodland, scrub and rough ground, the cattle will help break up dense bracken, manage coarse grasses and create space for a richer range of plants and habitats to recover.

As a member of our Loch Abar Mòr nature restoration partnership, it’s an exciting step for Ardtornish – supporting its long-term efforts to restore natural processes while continuing to farm and produce food.

We’re especially pleased to have played a small part in this story. A £9,000 grant from our Rewilding Fund helped bring the Droimeann herd to Ardtornish. We can’t wait to see how they help create a richer, healthier landscape.

Deer management is widely recognised as a public good, linked to everything from biodiversity recovery to woodland restoration.

The cost of deer management – and the benefits it provides – is mostly managed by landowners who have long sought to offset some of this cost by selling stalking experiences. But fewer deer on the hill can mean fewer opportunities to generate that income.

So how do we manage deer at levels that allow nature to recover, while sustaining the skilled stalkers Scotland needs? And, crucially, who should foot the bill?

For Estate Manager Deirdre Stewart, part of the answer could lie in greater public investment.
