Lingen Davies Cancer Support Lingen Davies Cancer Fund is an independent charity supporting cancer patients in Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin and Mid Wales.

The region's primary cancer charity, working to enhance cancer care and ensure those living in Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin, and Mid Wales can access excellent cancer services locally. We fund innovative projects which contribute to the treatment and prevention of cancer, and all of our money is spent locally. We are based at the Hamar Centre at the Royal Shrewsbury hospital.

Did you know we helped bring Surface Guided Radiotherapy Technology (SGRT) to Shropshire?

As today is - a day to highlight the vital, life-saving role of radiotherapy in cancer care - we wanted to celebrate the incredible impact SGRT has had on enhancing cancer treatment in our region.

We know that SGRT has a hugely positive emotional and physical impact on cancer patients as it removes the need for permanent skin-tracking tattoos which often come with a constant reminder of their diagnosis, as well as improving the accuracy and speed of treatment.

The enhanced treatment accuracy of SGRT also makes further developments possible, with new open-faced radiotherapy masks being created as a result. This development means patients with claustrophobia can undergo a life-saving treatment they may have been unable to previously due to the claustrophobic effects of wearing a radiotherapy head mask.

Last month, Vicki Jones organised her third Rock4Rich musical fundraiser at The Harp Albrighton in memory of her big brother, Rich.

Alongside sending her favourite photo of Rich, Vicki shared some words about her big brother and his cancer journey 💙

She said, "Now where do I start! Rich was my older brother. He was tall, dark, and handsome, strong as an ox, and hands like shovels. His main loves in life were motorbikes, pints down the pub, his mates, his dad and sisters. He worked hard and played hard, had a great sense of humour, and always told a funny story or several.

"Then, just as we were in the grip of the pandemic at the end of August 2020, Rich became unwell and was taken to hospital. Very sadly he was diagnosed with bowel cancer which had spread to his liver. He was told it was terminal, and by May 2021 it had gone to his lungs. Heartbreakingly, Rich passed away in July 2021.

"My father did most of Rich's hospital visits but in the last few months I was able to take time off work and take him. The thing that stuck with me is how lovely everyone was at the Lingen Davies Cancer Centre. They always greeted him with a wave and a smile. They did everything they could and he received treatment right up until the end, they never stopped trying.

"That's why I'm raising money for Lingen Davies Cancer Support, and this event is one that I know Rich would have enjoyed. I also do it to help my parents and family as I know it's been tough. It keeps Rich's memory alive and helps others."

In total, Vicki raised an outstanding £3,600.59 for Lingen Davies Cancer Support. A huge congratulations, and thank you 👏

Last week, our Trusts and Foundations Fundraiser Sophie visited the Mayfair Community Centre in Church Stretton to meet with some of our funders.

Rotary Club of Church Stretton, Heart of Wales Line, and Church Stretton Town Council all generously contributed to the funding of a series of sessions of Jenna Blair Yoga in Church Stretton, ensuring they're free for anyone living with and beyond cancer to attend.

These sessions are one of many activities delivered as part of our free to access Wellbeing Programme 💛

As part of our Wellbeing Programme, we've funded free dance classes with I Can Dance Shrewsbury for people living with and beyond cancer 💃

Sessions will begin in Welshpool on 10th September, and Shrewsbury from 1st October.

Today, we're thanking some of our incredible Telford supporters 💙

It's no surprise that each of them dedicated their fundraising efforts to our £5million Sunflower Appeal to fund the development of the new Lingen Davies Cancer Centre in (you guessed it) Telford!

🌻 As their nominated Charity of the Year, the team at M&S Telford hosted bring and buy sales, donated to purchase end of line unsold sale stock, and put collection buckets on tills and counter tops. After 12 months of fundraising efforts, they raised an impressive £2,738.53 for the appeal.

🌻 After joining the team at Telford & Wrekin Council, Dan Turner wanted to do what he could to support our £5million Sunflower Appeal and help fund the development of the new Lingen Davies Cancer Centre in Telford. Earlier this month, he took on the Solihull Half Marathon, raising a total of £271.25. Thank you!

Did you know there are five gynaecological (gynae) cancers? ✋

As today marks the beginning of Gynae Cancer Awareness Month, we'd like to share a fact about each of them to help raise public awareness.

💡 Womb cancer is the fourth most common cancer in women in the UK, with over 9,700 people diagnosed every year in the UK.

💡 Cervical cancer can affect anyone with a cervix at any age, but it's most common between the ages 30 and 34.

💡 Vaginal cancer is the rarest gynae cancer, accounting for less than 1% of all cancers diagnosed in women every year in the UK.

💡 Ovarian cancer is the sixth most common cancer in women in the UK.

💡 Vulval cancer affects 1,400 women and people with gynae organs every year in the UK.
