A great night for Shrewsbury BID and the projects we’re proud to be part of last night at Shrewsbury’s !

The Original Shrewsbury Ambassadors (organised by Shrewsbury BID and part-funded by Shrewsbury Tourism Association) were nominated for and won the Mayor’s Tourism Award - and showed up in force to claim their rightful trophy! Huge congratulations to the incredible volunteers for this well-deserved recognition. Not all of our Ambassadors could be present but we were so glad to see how many were! A sea of Ambassador blue!

Earl Drysdale, who will be familiar to you all as one of Shrewsbury’s Town Rangers, a joint project of Shrewsbury BID and Shrewsbury Town Council - he was nominated for and won a Courtesy Award for his important work in the town centre, where he regularly goes above and beyond the parameters of his role to support the welfare of vulnerable individuals and those in crisis. A well-deserved recognition for a reassuring constant on our streets.

Shrewsbury Summer of Wellbeing, the 6-week Original Shrewsbury programme we ran through from July to September 2025, was nominated for a Courtesy Award. We funded and co-organised this project with the amazing Annie Hambley, whose passion and love for the town and its people, and deep knowledge of community and individual wellbeing, made the programme a success. As Annie couldn’t be present, the award was collected by EJ.

Congratulations and thank you to all those nominated for this year’s awards. Last night was a great reminder of just how many people in this town regularly go above and beyond for their community, do exciting and innovative things in business, get hands on to drive tourism and put Shrewsbury on the map, or spend their lives advocating for the environment we live in.

Huge thanks to Shrewsbury Town Council, The Mayor of Shrewsbury and his team - and of course Shrewsbury Town FC for hosting.

It was great to see so many of our members on Thursday night as they tore themselves away from the promise of sunny beer gardens to join us at our Meet Your MP event for a discussion with Julia Buckley MP.

At Shrewsbury BID, we represent the interests of our members to the leaders and decision makers who shape the future of our town - and country’s - business landscape. This was a valuable opportunity for our members to share their experiences and concerns directly with our town’s MP in a financially trying time for small businesses, and we were pleased to see a large number of questions submitted prior to the event.

A big thanks to the MP and her office for coming along to meet our members face to face. Your time and willing is appreciated.

Further thanks to St Vincent Shrewsbury for hosting, catering and AV support.

📱 Add Your Voice to the Campaign for Better Mobile Coverage in Shrewsbury

Poor mobile coverage in Shrewsbury town centre affects both businesses and visitors.

Building on the UK's largest independent mobile coverage survey, which was conducted in Shropshire in 2024, Shropshire Council is mounting a campaign to push mobile networks and government to act.

They need your input. The survey takes 2 minutes to complete, and your responses will be used in lobbying both Mobile Network Operators and Central Government for improved mobile service in our town.

👉 Please complete the survey by Monday - https://forms.office.com/e/379hVm7rhi

The Home Office yesterday published its statutory guidance Martyn's Law, formally known as the Terrorism (Protection of Premises) Act 2025 Section 27. To inform how the Act will be enforced, the Security Industry Authority (SIA) has opened a consultation with relevant businesses about how the Act will be regulated when it comes into force in April 2027.

The statutory guidance is available to view on GOV.UK. It is designed to be accessible and easy to follow, without requiring specialist expertise or prior security knowledge to understand requirements. Practical illustrative examples are included in the guidance to support further understanding.

The Act will require premises in scope to have procedures in place to protect people in the event of a terrorist attack. Larger venues will face additional requirements around reducing vulnerability. Although it won't come into force before April 2027, preparation starts now.

The SIA consultation concerns how the Act will be regulated. If you run or manage a premises that's likely to be in scope (capacity of 200 to 799 for smaller venues, 800+ for larger venues), or will be supporting a premises in scope, your input is highly relevant, so please take the time to complete the online consultation -

Shropshire Chamber will be celebrating ‘excellence in tourism’ at this year’s annual business awards.

Given Shropshire's Visitor Economy topped the £1 billion mark this year, it's definitely a good time to bring this category back! The award will recognise organisations that deliver outstanding visitor experiences and showcase the very best of Shropshire’s tourism sector.

Also up for grabs this year are awards for community champion, outstanding business growth, excellence in manufacturing and engineering, retail leisure and hospitality achievement, and young business person of the year. New for 2026 is a ‘best place to work’ award, while eco-friendly companies can apply for a sustainability achievement prize.

The awards are free to enter, and companies do not have to be a Shropshire Chamber member to qualify. They simply need to have an operating base in either Shropshire or Telford & Wrekin.

Entries close on April 17 - apply via www.shropshire-chamber.co.uk/awards

Shrewsbury Town Council has taken over street cleaning services across the town this week - a significant shift in how the town's public realm is managed, bringing the service under local management and away from a county-wide, contracted approach.

The new dedicated team of nine will cover litter picking, bin emptying, mechanical street sweeping and graffiti removal, ensuring that Shrewsbury remains a clean and welcoming place for all. Bins will be emptied regularly based on footfall, with high-use areas such as the town centre being emptied every day.

The team will operate a 15-tonne road sweeper that will cover more of the road surfaces, whilst a 3.5-tonne road sweeper will be used to sweep footpaths, shuts, passages and other areas regularly used by residents.

For businesses, a cleaner, better-maintained town centre matters - it shapes the experience for shoppers, visitors and workers and keeps people proud to visit and support our town centre. We are pleased to see this change in the town's street cleaning service and hope to see a visible improvement in cleanliness as a result.

Cleanliness issues can be reported via enquiries @ shrewsburytowncouncil.gov.uk
