๐Ÿพ A different kind of search for our drone team! ๐Ÿš

While out conducting routine drone training, one of our Serve On drone operators was approached and asked if they could help search for Willow, a missing dog.

Putting their training and equipment to use, our drone operator searched the surrounding open areas and used thermal imaging to scan fence lines for signs of Willow.

Drone searches come with their own challenges. Dense tree canopies, thick vegetation and wood piles can obscure anything beneath them, limiting what both conventional cameras and thermal imaging can detect. Thermal cameras detect surface temperatures rather than seeing through solid objects, meaning even a strong heat signature can remain hidden. This makes understanding the limitations of the technology just as important as knowing how to use it.

Unfortunately, Willow wasnโ€™t located during the search. However, the drone helped rule out areas and provided a clearer picture of the surrounding terrain. There were plenty of sightings along the way, though, with several deer making an appearance on the thermal camera! ๐ŸฆŒ

Itโ€™s another example of how drone technology and the skills of our volunteers can make a difference in our local communities.

Weโ€™re keeping our fingers crossed that Willow is reunited with her family soon. โค๏ธ

Last weekend, our Search and Rescue volunteers came together for another weekend of training.

The team focused on essential medical skills, including recognising and managing crush injuries and controlling catastrophic bleeding. Volunteers also completed DEFRA Module 1 Water Awareness training, developing their understanding of the hazards associated with operating in and around water.

Training is about more than technical skills. Teamwork, communication and trust are equally important during emergency responses. To round off the weekend, our volunteers worked together to prepare and cook a team dinner.

As an entirely volunteer-led charity, regular training is essential to maintaining our operational readiness and ensuring we are prepared to respond when needed. If you would like to support our training link in bio.

The team of volunteers who supported our Venezuela deployment were presented with patches at the weekend in recognition of their hard work.

The significant committment made by the team who ran the operations room and those who travelled to La Guiara in the immediate aftermath of twin earthquakes was recognised by Serve On chair Paul Rose.

Maintaining a highly trained and deployable urban search and rescue team takes time and effort, and the charity is funded by public support.

Serve On volunteers recently took part in Exercise Swan Song, working alongside partner organisations in a realistic multi-agency training environment. Gloucestershire Fire & Rescue Dorset & Wiltshire FRS Gloucestershire Constabulary South Western Ambulance Severn Area Rescue Association Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner for Gloucestershire

Exercises like this give our teams the opportunity to test skills, equipment and procedures while building the relationships needed to work effectively alongside the emergency services during real incidents.

With emergency services facing increasing demand, trained voluntary organisations can provide valuable additional capability when it is needed most.

A huge thank you to everyone involved in planning and delivering Exercise Swan Song and to all the teams we had the opportunity to work alongside.

This week, volunteers from Serve On, REACT, 4x4 Response, Lowland & Mountain Rescue and other voluntary response organisations came together in Falmouth to support a large-scale evacuation following the discovery of unexploded Second World War ordnance.

Working alongside Devon & Cornwall Police, Cornwall Fire & Rescue Service, ambulance colleagues, Cornwall Council and other partner agencies, volunteers supported the evacuation and welfare of residents while specialist military teams worked to make the device safe.

Royal Navy bomb disposal specialists successfully lifted the 250lb American air-dropped bomb from the seabed and towed it to a designated area at sea.

With the cordon lifted, residents have now been able to return home.

A strong example of what can be achieved when the emergency services, military, local authorities and voluntary sector work together.

Proud to have played our part. ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ง๐Ÿค

Training on the tools ๐Ÿ”จ

Our recruits learn how to breach concrete safely and methodically, building the practical skills needed to work in damaged and unstable structures.

Itโ€™s not just about cutting through concrete itโ€™s about control, precision and understanding what could be on the other side.

Our Flood Rescue Team trains throughout the year to ensure they are ready to respond when communities are affected by flooding and severe weather.

Specialists in operating in fast-moving and hazardous environments, the team develops the practical skills, teamwork and judgement needed to carry out rescues safely and effectively.

As a DEFRA accredited Flood Rescue Team, our volunteers are trained to nationally recognised standards and can support emergency services and partner organisations during major incidents.

Serve On is made up entirely of volunteers, who give their time throughout the year to train, maintain equipment and remain ready to deploy when needed.

If you would like to support our volunteers and help us continue responding to emergencies across the UK and overseas, please visit our website.

Team Wendy in action on our recent deployment to Venezuela ๐Ÿ‡ป๐Ÿ‡ช

Protective equipment is essential to what we do. Safety, comfort, and reliability are crucial when working through unstable structures and confined spaces.

Team Wendy helmets provide the head protection, secure fit and accessory compatibility needed for demanding search and rescue environments.

Thanks to Team Wendy for the support
