💧 Scotland introduces water cremation to the UK

We were intrigued to read this recent article from ehospice, reporting on the recent introduction of water cremation in Scotland.

Currently the only region in the UK to offer this option, Scottish funeral directors can now offer the process as part of legal cremations with the first set to take place this summer.

Water cremation offers good environmental benefits, using less energy and producing up to 90% less CO2 than traditional flame cremation processes. Costs are expected to be around the same. It is anticipated that England will follow, with construction of a dedicated water cremation facility currently underway.

🗞️ Funeral industry regulation to be progressed by Department for Health & Social Care

Prior to his recent resignation, former Health Secretary Wes Streeting announced that the Department for Health & Social Care will be “taking the lead” in funeral industry regulation following a campaign led by families connected to the investigation into Hull’s Legacy Independent Funeral Directors.

Campaigners have sought to ensure that “the funeral industry is governed by clear, compassionate & enforceable rules & regulations to protect families at their most vulnerable”.

The government at the time of Streeting’s announcement stated that it is considering how to strengthen standards in the sector & will report further later in the year, although this is of course subject to revision given the recent changes in the Department. We’ll be keeping an eye on progress & updates.

🗞️ Consumer Duty Alliance launches new Bereavement Standard

The Consumer Duty Alliance, the independent professional body that helps financial services sector organisations to navigate and comply with the Consumer Duty, has recently launched its new Bereavement Standard, a voluntary set of standards that aims to define what good practice looks like when a firm supports recently bereaved people.

The NBS is proud to have worked with the CDA on design of the Standard, delivering valuable professional insight tailored to the financial services sector.

🗞️ Financial Conduct Authority to review bereavement processes

The FCA announced recently that it is set to launch a multi-firm review into bereavement processes this year.

FCA Head of Department, Consumer Investments Kate Tuckley described the review as “an important test of firms’ ability to deal with those processes” that “goes to the heart of our work looking at customer vulnerability”.

The FCA’s own figures state that 49% of UK adults show financial vulnerability characteristics, with bereaved people identified as vulnerable under the Consumer Duty.

The NBS welcomes this review, & looks forward to hearing more about its outcomes. The human factors connected to the delivery of professional financial services are often overlooked, & yet organisations operating in the sector are working with bereaved families daily.
