Being invited is not always the same as being able to participate.

A community activity may be open to everyone but people can still face barriers such as unclear information, inaccessible venues, overwhelming environments or inflexible arrangements.

Meaningful inclusion starts before the event:

1. Share clear accessibility information.

2. Ask what support would help.

3. Offer different ways to participate where possible.

4. Keep entrances and walkways accessible.

5. Listen without making assumptions.

What is one practical change that would make community activities more accessible to you or your family?

As Black History Month enters its final week, the work does not end with the calendar.

Black disabled people and Black carers contribute to families, workplaces, culture and community life every day. Meaningful recognition means ensuring people can enter the room, join the conversation, access information and influence decisions.

What is one barrier that community organisations should do more to remove?
Listening is the beginning, taking practical action is what creates change.

This Black History Month, the theme “Honouring Our Communities” invites us to recognise the people whose care, leadership and everyday contributions are not always visible.

Black disabled people and Black carers are part of that story: as parents, professionals, advocates, volunteers, neighbours, friends and community leaders.

True recognition sees the whole person. It values people’s contributions without reducing them to disability or caring responsibilities.

What everyday contribution deserves more recognition in your community?

Today is White Cane Safety Day.

A white cane is a practical mobility tool that supports independence. We can all help make everyday journeys safer by keeping pavements and entrances clear, moving bags and chairs out of walkways, and asking before offering assistance.

If someone would like support, listen and follow their lead. Accessibility begins with respect.

What could make journeys through your community more accessible?

Tomorrow is White Cane Safety Day.

A white cane is a practical mobility tool and a symbol of independence. Inclusion begins with everyday actions, keep pavements and crossings clear, give clear verbal directions, and never grab or move someone without asking.

If you think a blind or vision-impaired person may need support, introduce yourself and ask whether help would be useful. Respect their answer and follow their lead.

What would make journeys around your community more accessible?
