Do you know the risks of open water?

With warmer weather on the way, it can be tempting to cool off in lakes and rivers, but open water can be dangerous, even for strong swimmers.

Hidden hazards, cold water shock and unpredictable conditions can turn a fun day out into a life-threatening situation.

🚫 Wild swimming is not permitted in Milton Keynes’ lakes, ponds or rivers
💬 Please speak to your children about staying safe around water
📞 In an emergency, call 999 — never attempt a rescue yourself

Respect the risks. Stay out of the water.

Thank you to our Access Ambassadors who visited Ouse Valley Park to assess the accessibility of the green space🌳

The group shared what's working well and how access could be improved in certain areas with clearer signage, smoother path surfaces, less slopes and ideas of where benches could be added.

This group of volunteers will be helping us gather feedback on all of the parks along the River Great Ouse as part of our Wetland Arc Project. This feedback will be incorporated into the community-led masterplan to improve these parks for nature and people.

You can help too by sharing your feedback in our Wetland Arc survey 💬

Did you know we run a free Youth Rangers programme for 14 to 17-year-olds?

This group of volunteers help us with a variety of tasks across Milton Keynes’ parks whilst they gain valuable hands-on experience and learn new skills.

Sessions usually take place on the third Saturday of each month and activities include wildlife surveying, tree planting, pond clearance, wildflower seed collection and tackling invasive species.

Did you know we monitor bat populations in the parks?

In our recent surveys, we found 8 Long-eared bats in Campbell Park, the first-time recording bats in this area thanks to boxes which were installed in 2022. We were also pleased to record Noctule bats in Linford Wood (photographed).

This work is carried out by specially trained team members who have a bat licence. These surveys are crucial for enabling us to protect and improve habitats for these important flying mammals.

You can find out more about bats on our website or by joining us at an upcoming bat walk🦇
