🎗️ PTSD Awareness Month – June 🎗️
Did you know that June is Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) Awareness Month?
Please remember… not all wounds are visible, and not everyone who lives with PTSD has been to war.
For childhood cancer families, our war is against the “Big C” 💔
From the moment a child is diagnosed, life changes forever. The trauma begins immediately. The fear, the uncertainty, the endless hospital stays, treatments, procedures, surgeries and devastating conversations become part of everyday life.
And it’s not just parents who are affected…
Children, teenagers and young adults can develop PTSD too.
Imagine being a child and being repeatedly poked, prodded, scanned and medicated. Imagine living through painful treatments, endless blood tests, chemotherapy, surgeries and procedures that you don’t fully understand.
I know Henry did. He was only a little boy 🥺
As parents, we do things we never thought we’d have to do. We hold our children still for injections. We watch them suffer through treatments. We kiss them goodbye before surgery and walk away praying they’ll come back safely. We battle to keep weight on them, encourage them to eat, comfort them through sickness, fear and pain, all whilst desperately wishing we could swap places.
The treatment may end, but the trauma often doesn’t.
👉 The flashbacks
👉 The nightmares
👉 The anxiety
👉 The fear
Years later, something as simple as a smell, a sound, a hospital corridor or a memory can take you straight back to the darkest moments of your life.
People often say, “At least it’s over now.”
But childhood cancer never truly leaves you.
It changes you without your permission and leaves scars that many people will never see.
Today, please take a moment to think of the incredible children, young people and parents who continue to carry this invisible burden every single day. Despite everything, they get up, put on a brave face, smile and keep moving forward. 🫶
🤷♀️ PTSD is real
🤷♀️ PTSD is exhausting
🤷♀️ PTSD is heartbreaking
PTSD has a lot to answer for.
At Henry’s Legacy, Team Henry understand these challenges because we’ve lived them. That’s why we are proud to work alongside the wonderful Cat, our Henry’s Well-Being Lead, helping provide vital emotional and wellbeing support to families navigating the unthinkable. 💙
To every family affected by childhood cancer: please know you are not alone.
And to every person who supports, donates and fundraises for Team Henry, thank you. Because of you, more families can access the support they need when they need it most.
Together, we can break the silence.
Together, we can support one another.
Together, we can make a difference.
