🗣️ Public consultation is underway for the Aberdare to Hirwaun extension.

The proposal forms part of the wider South Wales Metro vision, which aims to improve public transport connections and make it easier for people to travel across the region.

Public drop-in sessions have already taken place in Aberdare and Hirwaun with another session planned in:

Did you know that former industrial areas in Wales are now home to bats the size of a plum, carnivorous plants and a millipede found nowhere else in the entire world? 🦇

In this Nation.Cymru, Transport for Wales Trafnidiaeth Cymru writer-in-residence, Jon Gower, catches a train on the Aberdare line to Cwmbach to explore how old landscapes have been transformed by the regenerative powers of nature.

Joining a walk at Aberaman Tip, Gower meets the team from Glo i Natur CIC, a community interest company dedicated to celebrating the unique biodiversity of coal spoil sites. He learns about the Maerdy Monster, a species of millipede discovered by enthusiast Christian "Sparrow" Owen underneath an old railway sleeper. 🐛

The journey highlights how these once black heaps are now thriving habitats. From dingy skipper butterflies to slow worms that can live up to 56 years in captivity, the area is packed with life. Gower also speaks with a local nurse, Heidi, who believes the calming, restorative power of walking in nature should be available on prescription. 🥾

REMINDER 📣 until Friday 30 October there will be no rail services between Cardiff Queen Street and Cardiff Bay.

The temporary closure will allow engineers to install new track to enhance future timetables and increase service frequency on the Cardiff Bay line, forming part of the wider South Wales Metro programme to deliver a more reliable, accessible and integrated regional transport network.

Rail services will resume as normal on Saturday 31 October.

Important and vital conversations took place at the Community Rail Network Conference in Derby this week.

We were delighted, Becky Lythgoe Chair of our Community Rail Partnership, was able to join us for the two day conference.

We kicked things off on Monday with an insightful field trip to Cromford alongside the Derwent Valley Line Community Rail Partnership. After a warm welcome from the Cromford Station Adopters, we learned about the group's fantastic community activities and the station's surprising links to modern musical culture. From there, we walked to Cromford Mills, part of the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site, to explore the historic mills, canal basin and local craft shops. We rounded off the day in Cromford village, famous for its 'Bear Pit' water management system and the legendary ‘Scarthin Books’ shop.

Then, during Tuesday's Open Platform sessions, we led a discussion on "How can men be allies in supporting safe journeys for women and girls?" Ensuring passenger safety and tackling intimidation on the network requires all of us working together, and we are proud to help drive this change.
