To celebrate, we want to share our FREE bat and moth night event! 🦇✨🦋
Held during National Moth Week, this after‑dark adventure is the perfect chance to discover the incredible wildlife living right on your doorstep.
We'll be at our newest site Teddingtons Field in Cefn Coed, alongside Nature on Your Doorstep for an evening of hands‑on nature discovery.
You’ll get to use Bat Detectors to listen in on local species, while our Moth Trap draws in the night’s light‑lovers for us to identify together.

Protecting Merthyr Tydfil's natural environment is our responsibility and we all need to report and mitigate against the impact invasive species such as Japanese Knotweed (Fallopia japonica) and Himalayan Balsam (Impatiens glandulifera) have on our parks, rivers, and green spaces.
Non‑native plants and animals can spread quickly, outcompeting local wildlife and damaging habitats. By learning how to identify and report them, our community can play a vital role in safeguarding our biodiversity 💚

We've also recently found a Burnet Companion (Euclidia glyphica) while out on grassland surveys! 🌳
This day-flying moth are named so due to being commonly found in the company of Burnet moths!
It thrives in species-rich grasslands where it's caterpillars feed on a variety of plants, such as bird's foot-trefoil, clovers and tufted vetch🌸
Finds like this help us understand how well our habitats are supporting invertebrate communities.

While surveying Merthyr’s grasslands, we’ve been spotting key indicator species, including the Swollen‑Thighed Beetle (Oedemera nobilis) 🪲
Adults emerge in spring and favour sunny days. They feed on pollen and visit open flowers like Oxeye Daises, Umbellifers and brambles, making them excellent pollinators 🌸
The larvae of this beetle are rarely seen as they live inside the stems of thistles and other plants!
Males are easily recognisable due to the large green bulges on the femora (thighs) of their hind legs which Females don't have!

Have you noticed these logs at our sites and wondered what they are? Well, they're stumperies!
Similar to a log pile, this dead wood habitat provides a valuable source of support for a range of species. 🪵
We partially bury dead wood, around 30cm deep in soil to target the Stag Beetle which relies on decaying wood for its life cycle as its larvae feed on rotting wood below ground.
The Stag Beetle (Lucanus cervus) is the UK's largest beetle but it is rare and listed as a Section 7 Species under the Environment (Wales) Act 2016 meaning that we have an obligation to conserve it! 🪲🐜🦗🦟🕷️🪳

Have you spotted our new hedgehog road-safety signs around Merthyr Tydfil?
we've installed them across the borough to remind drivers that small mammals are road users too. 🦔
Each year, an estimated 250,000 hedgehogs are killed on UK roads so, we're doing our bit to reduce this number by raising local awareness.🛻
If we all slow down and stay alert, we can help protect the wildlife that shares our community. 🦔
