Cyfarthfa High School’s SPACE Project Named Finalist in National Mental Health and Wellbeing Awards
Cyfarthfa High School is proud to announce that its pioneering SPACE Project has
been named a finalist in the National Mental Health and Wellbeing Awards, under
the category Outstanding Impact on Education.
This prestigious recognition celebrates the transformative work of the SPACE
initiative—Support, Positivity, Acceptance, Connection, and Empowerment—which
has made a profound impact on student wellbeing across the school community.
What sets SPACE apart is its student-led ethos. From its inception, the project has
been developed and directed by students, for students, ensuring that every aspect of
the initiative reflects the real needs, voices, and experiences of young people. This
approach has empowered students to take ownership of their mental health journey
and fostered a culture of peer support and resilience.
The SPACE project offers a safe and welcoming environment where students can:
• Relax and recharge in dedicated wellbeing spaces like The Cosy Corner,
featuring calming décor and comfortable seating.
• Engage in fun, structured activities during break times, lunchtimes, and
after school.
• Access one-to-one support from our youth worker, who is based on site.
• Build positive habits through group sessions focused on stress reduction,
healthy routines, and self-esteem.
“This nomination is a powerful validation of the incredible work our students have
done to support one another,” said B Davies, Deputy Headteacher at Cyfarthfa High School. “SPACE is more than a project—it’s a movement driven by compassion,
creativity, and community.”
The SPACE Project has been made possible thanks to Lottery funding, which has
provided vital support in helping the initiative grow and thrive. The school is deeply grateful for this funding, which has enabled students to lead meaningful change in their own environment.
The school extends its gratitude to the National Mental Health and Wellbeing
Awards for recognizing the SPACE project’s impact and to all students and staff who
have contributed to its success.
