BMC From walls to wild places... For every hill walker, climber & mountaineer. We're the British Mountaineering Council - or BMC for short.
(353)

It’s an exciting time for the outdoor world. A recent Active Lives Survey revealed that 2.14 million people now go hill walking, climbing or mountaineering twice a month. That’s almost 2 million walkers, around 100,000 outdoor climbers and 170,000 indoor climbers. Our activities are constantly evolving, and we are too: from nurturing future talent to owning climbing crags for the benefit of everyo

ne; from organising beginners’ climbing courses to raising over £100,000 to help mend the British mountains. People often call our work a broad church. We even work in one: a converted old church in West Didsbury, Manchester. For hundreds of dedicated volunteers and 31 paid staff, this is the hub for a diverse range of activities to help everyone get more out of climbing, hill walking and mountaineering. It doesn’t matter whether you’re a passionate indoor boulderer or a committed long-distance walker, you’ll find that our work benefits you. After all, we’re all connected by a shared love of adventure, whether that’s found on a chalky crimp or a windswept mountain. The BMC is rather unique: part your representative body, part campaigning organisation, part environmental pressure group, part land manager – and all so that you’re free to just get out there. In our exciting world, we can all find our natural home: from swinging axes to getting pumped on plastic, placing nuts to standing on summits. Our diversity is our strength. 37 empty poo bags, 153 plastic water bottles and a Nikon Camera… 📸

Last month, a team of 30 BMC volunteers removed 1,203 individual pieces of litter of Cwm Llwch on Pen y Fan.

With microplastic pollution significantly affecting delicate mountain ecosystems, we're working hard to remove single-use pollution from across England and Wales' most loved landscapes.

Our friends at helped us survey the items found, and the most common items were:

💩 Empty poo bags: 37
💧 Plastic water bottles: 153
🥫 Aluminium energy drink cans: 22
🍬 Confectionary sweet wrappers: 236
🥔 Crisp packets: 77
👕 Clothing: 93

In light of the recent tragic accident in Kalymnos, we want to reassure climbers that these incidents are extremely rare. But it’s a good moment to revisit one of the most important skills: checking the bolts we clip.

It's always worth taking a second look and making your own judgement. From spotting corrosion to recognising different bolt types, a bit of awareness goes a long way in helping you make confident decisions at the crag.

You're cranking it out, going for the onsight. But what's in the rock, stopping you from hitting the deck? The UK and abroad have an assortment of bolts; from old to new, hand-made to manufactured. Can you tell the difference and climb safely?

If wildfires are on your mind after this week's reports, have a read of UKC's interview with Claire Maxted from the BMC Access and Conservation Trust, who examines the issue, and some of the measures being taken across the country to address it:

Wildfires are a growing problem in the UK's uplands, and last year saw a record number. Why should climbers and hillwalkers be concerned, and what might we do to help? With fire season once...

We're saddened to hear about the moorland fires in Longdendale Valley and Marsden Moor this week.

There's some great advice on if you spot glass bottles, ci******es or portable BBQ's out in the countryside in the Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Service's post below.

If you want to take further action to help prevent future fires, join or spread the word about our Wildfire Fundraising walk taking place over our BMC Big Walking Weekend in May:
