Special Screening & Q&A with Samara Pearce

Join us for a special screening of the Ukrainian documentary Family Album, followed by a conversation with Samara Pearce.

Through personal family history, archive photography and Samara’s journey to Ukraine, the film connects the history of the Holodomor with present-day Ukraine and explores themes of memory, identity, resilience and truth.

Samara Pearce is the great-granddaughter of Alexander Wienerberger, whose photographs became some of the most important visual evidence of the Holodomor in Soviet Ukraine in 1932–1933.

🇬🇧 Recently, together with Plast UK Manchester Branch .manchester and Manchester Central Library we had the honour of opening this year’s exhibition dedicated to the victims of the Holodomor at Manchester Central Library.

The Holodomor of 1932–1933 was a man-made famine orchestrated by the Soviet regime to destroy the Ukrainian people, their identity, freedom, and right to exist.

This event holds special significance for Manchester. It was here in 1933 that Welsh journalist Gareth Jones, through The Manchester Guardian, became one of the first people in the world to tell the truth about the Holodomor despite Soviet attempts to hide the crime.

Today, as Ukraine once again faces immense suffering, remembering the past is more important than ever. We cannot allow the world to forget the lessons of history.

We cannot change the past, but we can ensure future generations never forget it.

🇺🇦 Нещодавно, спільно з Пласт UK станиця Манчестер та Manchester Central Library, ми мали честь відкрити цьогорічну виставку, присвячену жертвам Голодомору, у Central Library Manchester.

Голодомор 1932–1933 років — це штучно створений радянським режимом голод, спрямований на знищення українського народу, його ідентичності та свободи.

Для Манчестера ця подія має особливе значення. Саме тут у 1933 році валлійський журналіст Гарет Джонс через The Manchester Guardian одним із перших розповів світові правду про Голодомор.

Сьогодні памʼять про минуле набуває ще більшого значення. Ми не маємо права дозволити світу забути уроки історії.

What started as an event has now become a meaningful tradition for us — being part of this warm and welcoming community. At the same time, this number is a painful reminder that the war in Ukraine is still ongoing.

The headlines may be quieter now, newspapers publish less and less, but Ukrainians still need support — now more than ever.

Thank you for trusting us and inviting us to be part of this special day.
Together, we raised £228 this year 💙💛

Thank you to everyone who stopped by our stand, donated, shared kind words and supported Ukraine.
And a special thank you to our volunteers — for many of us, this is no longer “just volunteering”, but warm reunions with our people.
See you again at Prestwich Clough Day and other community projects.
