Our trustees have taken very different routes to the Board, bringing different experiences, perspectives and connections to the work. Many have long-standing relationships with Rekindle and the people behind it.

That breadth matters to us. Young people have been at the heart of Rekindle from the very beginning, helping to shape the original school and, over the years, becoming part of its leadership and governance too.

As we grow into Rekindle Collective, we want to hold onto that spirit, with a Board that is genuinely invested in the young people, communities and places we work alongside.

In our new short film, our trustees share what brought them to Rekindle, what being a trustee means to them and the role they hope to play in what comes next.

Do you know a young person who has something to say about where they live? Do they enjoy art, writing, performance or sharing ideas? Would they like to meet like-minded people their own age in a safe and welcoming space ?

At South London Rising, they can choose creative workshops exploring voice, creativity, resistance and the future of South London. They do not need to know anyone, arrive with an idea or feel confident speaking in a group. There will be different ways for them to take part and immerse themselves in changemaking for good.

It’s free for ages 13 to 18 on Friday 30 October in Tulse Hill. Food and a live DJ are included.

Run in partnership with Rekindle Supplementary School and funded by The National Lottery Community Fund, this promises to be an unforgettable day where they can pick up some useful skills and make an impact 🙌

5 DAYS LEFT to apply for our leadership development programme A.C.T. 📣
We’re looking for eight young people aged 16–25 from across Greater Manchester, who want to think, question, challenge and help shape what youth activism looks like.

Through A.C.T. (Analyse. Campaign. Transform), you’ll take part in workshops and masterclasses, develop your leadership skills and, most importantly, work together to create a youth vision and strategy that will help shape how we work with young people going forward.

This isn’t about us deciding what youth activism should look like and asking young people to agree. We want you to help build it. You’ll receive a £500 honorarium for taking part, with travel and food for in-person sessions covered too.

Applications close Tuesday 15 September at 6pm. If this sounds like you, or you know someone who needs to see it – there are just five days left to get an application in.

Following her recent Youth Voices interview, 20-year-old activist Binish has written a new piece digging deeper into why she believes banning social media for under-16s misses the bigger picture.

For Binish, this isn’t only about screen time. It’s about what happens when youth centres, community projects and other spaces for young people disappear, while social media increasingly becomes the place they find opportunities, learn new things and connect with communities.

Sometimes you can SEE what a space FEELS like ❤️ These beautiful stills were captured by Rob Ball while making 'The Power of Third Spaces' our newest short film spotlighting our young people and staff in Manchester and London.

One of the things we wanted to understand through this work was what makes Rekindle feel different. Again and again, we came back to relationships.
Knowing the young person in front of you. Making space for conversation, creativity, laughter and connection. Learning together rather than deciding in advance what somebody's journey should look like.

These pictures capture a little bit of that for us.

If you haven't seen 'The Power of Third Spaces' yet, you can watch the full film here: https://youtu.be/oiKyUchrdT0?si=t1ugP19vyD_KZY2m

In the latest interview from our Youth Voices series, 18 year old Ishan reflects on the role social media has played in helping him learn, develop his political outlook and connect with others, while recognising the very real harms that exist online too.

For him, banning young people doesn’t tackle the root of the problem. He wants to see tech companies held responsible for harmful content, greater investment in spaces for young people offline, and young people themselves included in decisions that will have a huge impact on their lives.

🎬 THE POWER OF THIRD SPACES. We’re so proud to share this short film, created with young people and staff across Rekindle Schools in Manchester and London, shot and edited by Rob Ball. Watch the full film here: https://youtu.be/oiKyUchrdT0?si=BmZ44vgKEugOzYv4

But first… do you know what a 'third space’ is?
Simply put, it’s somewhere outside of home and work or school where we can spend time, connect with others and feel part of something.

For young people, these spaces can be particularly important and through the voices and experiences of young people and our staff, the film explores what these spaces can make possible when relationships come first, young people have real agency, and there’s room for creativity, experimentation and new opportunities.

And perhaps most importantly, what it means to have spaces that strengthen identity and belonging at a time when young people are telling us they’re feeling more pressure, powerlessness and a reducing sense of hope.

Watch this 20 second glimpse then have a watch of the full film and share share share!

A milestone for Same Shirt, Different Lives ⚽💙

Our sister organisation The Roots Programme, which will soon become part of Rekindle Collective, has recently wrapped up its first full three-session pilot at QPR.

The idea behind Same Shirt, Different Lives is pretty simple: supporting the same club gives you an immediate connection with someone, but it certainly doesn’t mean you’ve lived the same life or see the world in the same way.

Over three sessions, Rangers fans used that common ground to get into some really interesting conversations – about football, of course, but also family, community, identity, belonging and plenty more besides.

There’s lots to take away from this first pilot, and we’re really looking forward to Same Shirt, Different Lives becoming part of Rekindle Collective as Roots and Rekindle come together.

For now, a big congratulations to everyone involved in getting this first pilot off the ground. 👏

You can read the full story over on the QPR website 👇

The JOY in these photos is everything 🌟 Our Rekindle London Summer Programme came to an end last week after 3 weeks of making, performing, learning and trying new things.
There were challenging scenes created around the debate on a social media ban, plus some brilliant sessions with our Oasis partners.

📸 YCUK brought out some hidden talents with a photography workshop that got young people both behind and in front of the camera.
⚽️ Girls United introduced the group to inspirational women footballers before getting everyone moving with training drills.
🥁 And Symphony brought the beats, teaching the group how to play the drumline to Michael Jackson’s *Billie Jean*.

A big thank you to all our partners who joined us over the three weeks, and of course to the young people who got stuck into it all. Here are a few moments from the programme, with some professional photos still to come 👀📸
