Fant Nature Reserve

Fant Nature Reserve Fant Nature Reserve is a special place for nature and community. The Fant Wildlife Group is a charity of volunteers from the local community.

There are benches to sit and ponder on, streams to hear flowing, native wildflowers, trees for children to scramble over, a budding orchard, wildlife and birds. The group was started in 1996 to manage an area of abandoned allotment gardens close to the town centre of Maidstone. The aim of the Fant Wildlife Group is to maintain and diversify the wildlife in the Fant Wildlife Area, to encourage educ

ational use and local involvement. Work is continuing to create a diversity of habitats for wildlife on the site by building ponds, planting native trees and plants, and to encourage use of the site by the community. Fant Wildlife Group Reg Charity Number: 1088852

Many thanks to everyone who supported our 30th anniversary celebration as part of Maidstone's Big Day Out!
We had an excellent turnout of volunteers to get the site ready and set up for the event.
It was great to see volunteers and trustees from over the years reuniting in the sunshine.
We were entertained by the indefatigable sax and clarinet ensemble led by Clive.
It is also appropriate to thank the local people and organisations who made donations following our arson attack in January.
We acknowledge with gratitude a grant to replace our event furniture from Kent County Council/Councillor Oliver Bradshaw.

A visit to the reserve this morning to give the main path a quick brush cut.
In breaks to let the machine cool down, there was of course time to bother some bugs. Only phone pictures.

A separate note about the small pond which we've been clearing over the past year or so. Last year we spotted a male broad bodied chaser dragonfly on the pond (the blue tailed one in the photo). This morning I was delighted to see the other one in the photo, which is most likely female. This species of dragonfly had not been recorded at the reserve before last year.

A visit to the reserve to have the haycutter looked at. Many thanks to Les from Maidstone CAN Repair Cafe for your advice and guidance.
We've started to clear the central area ready for our 30th anniversary event on 13th June.
While on site, of course there was a chance to photograph some bugs!

Message from Diane T -
Morning 🙂
Inspired by BBC’s “Springwatch”, I finally did something I’ve been meaning to do for years - get up to properly hear a full Dawn’s Chorus. Alarm set I headed off to the reserve and sat on Morel’s seat at 4.20 and took it all in.
It didn’t disappoint 😍 . . . .
Heard all the above plus Magpie and Goldcrest.

(The video needed to be posted separately in case it doesn't appear on your feed)
