Ballito’s factory on Bute Street was part of Luton’s manufacturing history, producing ladies’ stockings and providing employment for local workers. Here ladies can be seen working in the factory.

Do you have a photograph that captures Luton’s industrial heritage?

We’re looking for photographs that show the industries, places and working lives that have shaped Luton. From making hats and working in the factories, to life at the airport and the businesses and industries that continue to make Luton what it is today.

Perhaps you have an old photograph of the cocoa or honey factories, Skefco or Electrolux, a former workplace, or a place that has changed over the years. We’re interested in bringing together photographs from the past and present to show Luton through the eyes of the people who have lived and worked here.

New or old, candid or carefully composed, your photograph could feature in our upcoming exhibition in 2027.

Entries are officially open and close on Sunday 13th December at 5pm.

Luton’s industries have brought people to the town from across the UK and around the world. As industries such as Vauxhall grew, they created new opportunities and attracted people looking for work and a chance to build a life in Luton.

For many, a job was more than just a job. It could mean a new home, new opportunities and a future for their family.

As Ramesh, a former Vauxhall worker recalls: “There was an advert – build your future. I was hoping to build a future there, which I did.”

A tea-time favourite at Vauxhall was bread and dripping. It was often said that if you didn’t get in the queue early, it would sell out!
