Stepping Stones is an award winning and Women's Aid accredited registered charity. Stepping Stones was set up in May 2008.

We support women impacted by domestic abuse, those vulnerable to substance misuse or at risk of offending. We are a charity dedicated to supporting women to transform the stumbling blocks of their lives into stepping stones; creating happier, healthier lives for women, their children and families. We provide a safe, welcoming, non-judgemental environment for women living in Luton and, for specific projects, across Bedfordshire, who have suffered abuse, who are vulnerable due to substance misuse, offending, mental health conditions and/or are involved with Local Authority Children’s Social Care.

We want to say a big thank you to Emma Simpkins and her team of volunteers from Crane Building Services & Utilities (Crane BSU Hitchin).

On Monday they removed a very stubborn tree stump from our playground in preparation for refurbishments. We loved hearing the cheer when the thing was finally removed 😀. We hope you'll come back and visit again soon.

Last March, local supporters, schools and groups spent a night at the shopping centre in the middle of Luton and raised more than £8,000 for NOAH Enterprise H Enterprise, Stepping Stones Luton and Impakt Housing & Support

We’re doing it again on Friday 19th March 2027, at what’s now Frasers Plus Luton s Luton.

Adults sleep out on the car park roof. Schools, families and groups with under 18s sleep inside the centre, with adults supervising throughout. This year there’s also food, a panel and entertainment on the night.

Register for £5 until 31st January (£10 after that). Groups are £10.

People with lived experience of mental health issues have a superpower 💪

Their knowledge is expertise and it can shape services like ours for the better.

Most women that come through our doors are struggling with stress, anxiety and depression. Their insight is crucial in improving the support we offer. Here are some of ways we are embedding their lived experience across our organisation:

👑 Lived experience at leadership level

Lived experience is present on our Board and within our Leadership team shaping strategic decisions and ensuring the voices of vulnerable women are reflected at the highest levels.

👥 Lived experience in our programmes

People with lived experience co-design and shape the work we deliver. Two of our programmes – Beyond Anger and Serenity, which covers the fundamentals of mindfulness – were developed in-house by keyworkers utilising their own personal experience of abuse and mental health concerns.

💜 Lived experience at every level

As we work to embed lived experience more deeply, we are introducing survivor voices groups to ensure women impacted by abuse continue to shape the future direction of our charity.

Lived experience isn’t just a nice to have at Stepping Stones, it is at the heart of what we do bringing real voices, real change.

World Su***de Prevention Day. In 2025, at least 150 suspected su***des were linked to domestic abuse.

The Lancashire Police and Crime Commissioner is calling on the UK Government to introduce to recognise domestic abuse–related su***de in law. Kiena Dawes was a young mother who tragically took her own life after experiencing ongoing abuse.
