Kate on Conservation

Kate on Conservation A wildlife conservation blog highlighting important conservation issues, individuals and organisations to give a voice to the voiceless.

The goal when I started this blog was to be a campaigner and educator, spreading the word on things I felt weren’t receiving the coverage they should have been, and to inspire younger people to take an interest in the need for environmental and wildlife conservation. By admitting my own misconceptions and ignorance at times (I’ve visited SeaWorld, petted a lion, seen el

ephants perform in Indonesia…), I have hopefully struck a different note, a passive voice who speaks from experience, but has now become knowledgeable enough to trust: and my blog follows that journey into knowledge and education. I began blogging in 2011, as part of a university course, which required that I create four different types of post during the semester. I was asked, when I pitched my idea to the class, whether there would be enough to write about on the topic of conservation to fill the semester. Six years later, I continue to write regular updates on the site, have met some of my biggest idols and inspirations to discuss world-changing issues, and have done my best to spread the word on compassionate conservation; that is, to use cases and examples of individuals to promote a bigger conservation message.

36! Made it 😅. From where I stand today, I’m celebrating 🎉. 35 was professionally incredible and personally, a hell fire that I didn’t deserve, and a rough season of rebuilding, healing and recovering. 36 is for more healing, more building, and more work towards deeper joy and contentment✨. It might even be fun 😁🤞.
Thanks to everyone who’s stuck around, and the many people who have saved me this last year, with or without them realising it. Especially my children, who are resilient, patient, loving and held by their mama, every single day.
While I’m trying to go easy on myself, I can’t wait to meet future me! I think she’s going to be awesome! 💖

Perfect time to finish this book. Most days I’d look at a page or two with the children over breakfast, to start the day off, though it’d been getting a little less frequent of late. Changing seasons and all that. Nice to have little comforts, daily thoughts and pretty pictures with some childhood familiarity to look at when we needed them ☺️.

Beeeeautiful day! ☺️🌸🌳. Grateful for the trees, the flowers, the blue skies, the laughs, the hugs, the sunshine, the ice creams, the tree climbing 💖. Experiencing nature through children’s eyes is the best! Please let this be a rehearsal for the summer holidays 🥰.

Spontaneous Sunday Swim!🏊🏼. First time ‘wild swimming’ for the children and next time we’ll definitely bring swimwear 😆, but kudos to the summer dress for handling it when I put the camera down and went for a real swim (and played ‘Mermaids and Mermen’ 🧜‍♀️🧜☺️). Here’s to parenting without a plan!

Time for the rest of the UK to follow! I’ve been a supporter of Hannah Bourne-Taylor’s fabulous campaign on this for a few years, and really hope it succeeds!

Scotland will require swift bricks in all new buildings after MSPs backed a law to help endangered cavity-nesting birds. The move aims to support declining swift populations, which have fallen sharply since 1995, by creating safe nesting spaces in modern homes. Campaigners praised the decision and urged the rest of the UK to follow, saying low-cost bricks can make a vital difference for wildlife.
