The goal when I started this blog was to be a campaigner and educator, spreading the word on things I felt weren’t receiving the coverage they should have been, and to inspire younger people to take an interest in the need for environmental and wildlife conservation. By admitting my own misconceptions and ignorance at times (I’ve visited SeaWorld, petted a lion, seen elephants perform in Indonesia…), I have hopefully struck a different note, a passive voice who speaks from experience, but has now become knowledgeable enough to trust: and my blog follows that journey into knowledge and education. I began blogging in 2011, as part of a university course, which required that I create four different types of post during the semester. I was asked, when I pitched my idea to the class, whether there would be enough to write about on the topic of conservation to fill the semester. Six years later, I continue to write regular updates on the site, have met some of my biggest idols and inspirations to discuss world-changing issues, and have done my best to spread the word on compassionate conservation; that is, to use cases and examples of individuals to promote a bigger conservation message.

This past week marked 1 year since the passing of Dr. Jane Goodall. An incredible force of nature, and the epitome of the indomitable spirit of hope that she advocated with such unwavering clarity. Her wisdom, humour and special brand of “Jane’s Magic ✨” are certainly missed, but also taking on their own life in her absence, thanks to all the people she inspired to take agency, her incredible family, and the wonderful teams from Dr. Jane Goodall and Roots & Shoots across the globe.

In a challenging time, Jane’s passing inspired me to pick up a pencil for the first time in YEARS and get creative. And my goodness re-connecting with that side of myself has been wonderful. ✨

Stay hopeful and keep in mind the impact you have (and can have) on the planet every single day. For Jane 💚

Africa: Earth’s Wild Home 🌍🎥 🍿. So great to join National Geographic UK and Disney+ UK teams at BAFTA 195 earlier this week, to celebrate the premiere of Africa Earth’s Wild Home with ROLEX. National Geographic Society Explorers, staff, and CEO Jill Tiefentaler — as well as legendary Explorer at Large Sylvia A. Earle — joined the yellow carpet ceremony to mark the release of this truly remarkable new series! The stories, the shots, the unexpected twists and turns!! 🤩 Wow!
Great to hear from Nat Geo Explorers Gladys Kalema-Zikusoka and Steve Boyes on the panel Q&A following the screening! Finding new ways to showcase the incredible biodiversity of the African continent is no easier feat, kudos to all involved for genuinely making me gasp in awe!

It’s taken me a minute to think about how to pay tribute to Joe. Mainly because he called out every single bit of bu****it that he ever felt crossed his path. So I won’t bu****it now, or inflate my sense of relevance to his life. But we did enjoy a similar sense of humour, and had some very valuable chats over the years (and some good sessions of spilling the tea! ☕️😆). So I’ll certainly miss the space he made for us to talk so candidly, and always with a little bit of devilish humour. And I’ll keep on sharing the message of his work, which I have always very much believed in.
One of the last things he said to me, in his usual style, was: “honestly Kate, I’m just a bit of a prick.”

Go bird in peace now Joe, you prick🖕🏻.

Collaboration Week came at just the perfect moment for me — after a brilliant summer, a successful start to a new school year and meeting some health and fitness milestones — a trip to Washington DC was just the place to reflect and renew a sense of purpose (and set some new goals) with wonderful colleagues and friends who truly fill my cup! And we got to celebrate a new cat together 😆😻. I can’t wait to come back to base camp again soon! ❤️
