As Africaโs urban population continues to grow rapidly, energy access in cities, particularly in informal settlements, is becoming an increasingly pressing challenge. With 609 million people now living in urban areas, nearly ๐ฒ๐ฌ% ๐ฟ๐ฒ๐๐ถ๐ฑ๐ฒ ๐ถ๐ป ๐ถ๐ป๐ณ๐ผ๐ฟ๐บ๐ฎ๐น ๐๐ฒ๐๐๐น๐ฒ๐บ๐ฒ๐ป๐๐ where access to clean, sustainable energy is limited and inadequate.
๐ Two recent studies from Energy 4 Impact, conducted through the UK Aid-funded Enabling African Cities for Transformative Energy Access (ENACT) project, centre upon recent interventions in ๐๐ฟ๐ฒ๐ฒ๐๐ผ๐๐ป, ๐ฆ๐ถ๐ฒ๐ฟ๐ฟ๐ฎ ๐๐ฒ๐ผ๐ป๐ฒ and ๐๐ฎ๐บ๐ฝ๐ฎ๐น๐ฎ, ๐จ๐ด๐ฎ๐ป๐ฑ๐ฎ, and explore the innovative financing mechanisms and market-driven solutions that can bring clean cooking technologies and fuels to underserved urban populations.
๐จ ๐๐ฒ๐ ๐ณ๐ถ๐ป๐ฑ๐ถ๐ป๐ด๐:
โข Despite progress in grid expansion and off-grid solutions, both Freetown and Kampala face significant energy access gaps, particularly in informal settlements. With their populations projected to double over the next 20 years, the demand for sustainable energy solutions will only grow.
โข Financing remains the key barrier. Tailored financing options for both clean cooking solution providers and end users are essential. Innovative mechanisms like blended finance, microfinance, and pay-as-you-go models can help scale businesses and make solutions more affordable.
โข The private sector plays a critical role in advancing energy access, but it requires supportive policies, regulatory frameworks, and financing mechanisms to achieve scale. Public-private partnerships are key to de-risking investments, fostering innovation, and attracting private sector investment to expand clean energy solutions in underserved urban areas.
As urbanization accelerates across Africa, the findings from these reports provide valuable insights for service providers, policymakers, investors, and development agencies looking to address similar challenges across the continent.
