🌿 We’re in the middle of Love Your Burial Ground Week, Churches Count on Nature and National Cemeteries Week 🦋⛪🌼

For more than 16 years, Caring for God's Acre has encouraged everyone who helps care for churchyards, chapel yards and cemeteries to celebrate these beautiful spaces during June by highlighting the amazing wildlife they support. 🐝🌳🐦

This joint initiative is promoted by Caring for God’s Acre, The Church of England , The Church in Wales / Yr Eglwys yng Nghymru and A Rocha UK with National Cemeteries Week hosted by the National Federation of Cemetery Friends. 🤝💚

With more than 20,000 burial grounds across England and Wales, recording biodiversity data on plants, animals and fungi is so important. 🌸🍄🦔 This information helps educate local communities, informs decision makers, and supports the protection of these special places from development, closure and poor management.

A number of webinars have been taking place taking place throughout the week, with Lichens in Churchyards tomorrow and God’s Green Spaces on Friday - https://www.caringforgodsacre.org.uk/webinars-summer-26/

You can also explore the Beautiful Burial Ground Data Portal, part of the NBN Atlas, where you’ll find survey information and details on how to submit wildlife records. 📚🔍

🔬🌿 Celebrating Taxonomy Recognition Day

23 May marks Taxonomy Recognition Day, the birthday of Carl Linnaeus - often regarded as the grandfather of taxonomy. It’s a moment to celebrate the science of naming, describing, and classifying life on Earth, and the vital role it plays in understanding and protecting biodiversity.

In the UK, the UK Species Inventory (UKSI), developed and managed by the Natural History Museum, London provides a single, authoritative source of standard reference names for our flora and fauna. It underpins how species data is shared and managed across the National Biodiversity Network (NBN) and forms the backbone of the NBN Atlas.

Today, 52,869 out of 75,987 species from the UKSI have been recorded on the NBN Atlas - that’s nearly 70% of all UKSI species represented! A testament to the power of collaboration, data sharing, and the contributions of recorders and taxonomists across the country.

This year, the TETTRIs project - a coalition of Europe’s leading natural history museums and botanical gardens - is celebrating with the campaign, encouraging everyone to get involved:
📸 Find a species – spot wildlife in your local area
🔍 Identify it – discover its scientific name (tools like iNaturalist.org can help)
📲 Share it – post your finding using and contribute to global biodiversity knowledge.

As we head into a sunny bank holiday weekend, it’s the perfect opportunity to get outside, record wildlife, and recognise the essential work of species experts and taxonomists - both in the UK and beyond.

Let’s celebrate the science that helps us understand life on Earth - and the people behind it.

🌍🌱 Acting locally for global impact

Today, 22 May, is the International Day for Biological Diversity (IDB) 2026, a global moment to come together and take action to halt and reverse biodiversity loss.

This year’s theme, “Acting locally for global impact,” highlights how efforts close to home can create meaningful change far beyond our communities.

People around the world will come together to bring biodiversity into focus - in communities, schools, online, and through activities that connect people with nature.

At the NBN Trust, we’re proud to support this in many ways:
🌿 In communities – we support the National Biodiversity Network, bringing together hundreds of organisations and thousands of people recording and sharing data about the UK’s wildlife.
🎓 In schools – through the National Education Nature Park, learners are discovering nature on their doorstep and using iNaturalistUK to record what they find.
💻 Online – the NBN Atlas now holds over 362 million wildlife records. This incredible resource feeds into GBIF : Global Biodiversity Information Facility, completing the circle of local action driving global impact.

Everything we do is about protecting and restoring the UK’s biodiversity through collaboration and shared purpose.
