Under One Sky

Under One Sky Under One Sky is a volunteer-led charity set up to support vulnerable communities in society. It is our shared place to collaborate and inspire.

Under One Sky was set up for you to tell the stories behind the people who live on the streets on this page. By contributing your story on Under One Sky we get one step closer to creating a book and thereby helping even more homeless. And as an added bonus you become the author of the book. Under One Sky was born out of an event Dignity Entertainment did for the homeless in the Winter of 2012.

“Nobody should spend the first day of a new year isolated and alone” this is a simple principle of ours. Today our teams supported close to 300 homeless friends who were freezing, hungry and finding the day tough. It was worrying to see many struggling with colds and potential lung infections. Imagine what that must be like and then facing a week of sub-zero temperatures. A big thank you to Punjab Restaurant for supplying delicious turkey wraps – they went down a storm. A day of many memories, moments and most importantly beautiful people.

On Christmas day Under One Sky had a wonderful day on the streets bringing Christmas lunches, presents and cards to almost 400 homeless friends. We covered all corners of London from Archway to Clapham to Hackney to Notting Hill. The gratitude from our homeless friends was immense. Seeing the reactions when people get piping hot turkey dinners, Christmas presents and Christmas cards was priceless. A special huge thanks to The Thomas Franks Foundation who spent 3 days prepping meals. New Skywalker Paul summed up the spirit perfectly “I can’t properly articulate how I feel. Outside of the birth of my five children, that experience today was the best of my life. It was a privilege to be involved.”

Our teams are doing extra shifts doing the Christmas week to support our homeless friends at a time where many regular support services are closed. To support our work use the link in the first comment.

Hugely grateful! As part of the film release of URCHIN, Harris Dickinson and production company Devisio have launched this t-shirt with all proceeds donated to Under One Sky. Most homelessness is rooted in childhood trauma – lives damaged and life trajectories set without those children having any choice. As years go by neglected children become homeless abandoned adults. This is the truth of the matter. Support our work to support those abandoned adults by getting your t-shirt on the Devisio Pictures website.

Join film director Harris Dickinson and Under One Sky founder Mikkel Juel Iversen at this special charity screening of Harris’ incredibly bold and powerful film URCHIN. Hackney Picturehouse and Devisio Pictures are organising with 100% of ticket sales donated to Under One Sky. Each ticket sold means a sleeping bag or night indoors for a homeless friend. A huge thank to Alice Werdine and Clare Binns for making it happen. Tickets are selling fast so don’t miss out - book on the Picturehouse website. This is truly a full circle moment…to understand why, read the story below.

In Oct 2021 Harris and Mikkel were introduced by film producer Raimund Berens. Harris was writing the script for URCHIN and wanted to ensure the story of lead character homeless Mike was based on truth. Harris signed up to volunteer with Under One Sky on the streets to directly support people affected by homelessness. There he met and learned from Brian and Nuala who are both credited in the film. Harris then proposed to reignite Under One Sky Hackney which had operated during the Covid lockdowns. To make it happen he organised a collaboration with Hackney Picturehouse making the cinema the home for UOS Hackney. This collaboration undoubtedly also led to the Picturehouse cinema run for the Under One Sky co-produced documentary I’M STILL HERE by Franc Vissers and Elizabeth Healey in 2023. Harris together with Downton Abbey’s Elizabeth McGovern, Jade Jagger and Mikey Hennegan organised the VIP launch event for the documentary which was attended by rock n roll legend Mick Jagger. Hackney Picturehouse is still the home of Under One Sky Hackney and is now screening URCHIN which was the starting point for this wonderful journey full of positive impact in so many ways. As if it was all written in the stars…

Ordinary people...not quite. Last week Under One Sky's Embankment team came across a man lying lifeless face down on the pavement. There was one couple standing near him and our team asked what actions they’d taken. “Yes” they’d called an ambulance. Next the striking question…had anyone turned him over to check if he was breathing? “No”. The team sprung into action. Turned him over - checked his breathing and he regained consciousness. The team gave him water and something to eat. He was fully conscious by the time the team left. You can’t help but ask the question. Would the concerned passersby have turned the person over to check for a sign of life if he had been: a child, an elderly person or someone wearing a suit?

Today, let’s meet to talk about purpose. Many who by society’s standards are successful both in their professional and private lives but they say their lives lack purpose. The irony is we’ve been spoon fed the narrative since birth that our own success is the key to happiness. But the key to a deeper sense of meaning and fulfilment comes from being of service to something outside ourselves. I’M STILL HERE by France Vissers and Elizabeth Healey captures a moment where more than a 1000 Londoners risked their own safety to saves the lives of others. Join us to watch and discuss what gives life meaning. As the world is in a stage of turmoil and change it is incredibly important to have activities in life that provide us meaning and a sense of connection.

If you haven’t yet seen this powerful film by Franc Vissers and Elizabeth Healey then here is another chance. It is a piece of London history. For the Q&A we hope we can discuss some deep topics. Hope is scarce for many of us at present. Yet hope is the magic potion that can turn darkness into light. I’M STILL HERE tells the story of hope despite hopeless circumstances. It nourishes the flame of life. We hope to see you on Sunday.
