Our new Walk and Draw series got off to a cracking start yesterday 💖

We had such a great time sketching away with you all in Haggerston Park, and loved drawing the adorable and almost-never-still residents of Hackney City Farm! We quickly became experts at capturing animals in the brief moments they paused before trotting, hopping, or waddling off again 😂 thank you so much to everyone who came along and made the day so special 🫶🏼

On the second Sunday of each month we’re exploring different areas and green spaces around North and East London with drawing materials in hand - these events are completely free, open to all abilities, and a lovely chance to build your confidence in drawing, explore the city in a unique way, and join a friendly community of scribblers!

“I can’t draw” 💀

This is hands down the one phrase we hear more than any other! First things first: everyone can draw, and everyone DOES draw… until they’re told they can’t. Every child instinctively picks up a pen or pencil and starts making marks, long before they’ve begun to read or write or speak.

For as long as humans have existed, we have always drawn - it is an innate form of expression and communication.

And before you start saying ‘I’m not artistic’ or ‘I don’t have a creative bone in my body’… 🤫 creativity lives in us all, even you!

You don’t need special training or fancy supplies to express yourself - it’s is simply about making marks and finding joy in the process 💙

“While ‘learning to draw’ is important for some students, learning how to use drawing is essential for all.” 🙌 -

We caught up with Lucy Ward, Drawing Lead for the School of Arts at UWE Bristol and Senior Lecturer in , to hear all about their new initiative placing strong emphasis on the cross-disciplinary uses of drawing and its importance across all creative subjects. ‘Drawing Week’ formed a key part of this approach, and we were delighted that UWE chose to make it part of The Big Draw Festival in 2025 ✏️

The Big Draw team loved heading over to Bristol to deliver one of over 100 workshops that took place throughout the week - from life drawing in the theatre (complete with stage lighting and disco balls!) to experimental mark-making, city reportage, and even a giant camera obscura built by the photo team 🪩

The whole week was a brilliant celebration of ✏️ head to our blog (via the link in bio) to read the full interview!
