Make a difference for heart and lung care ❤️💙

Volunteering is a great way to get involved with The Brompton Fountain and meet new people. You’ll work alongside our staff team to make a meaningful difference for children with heart and lung conditions and their families.

We are seeking volunteers to support our in-hospital activities at Royal Brompton Hospital, Harefield Hospital, St Thomas' Hospital and Evelina London Children’s Hospital, as well as our fundraising and community engagement events throughout London and the South East.

There are opportunities for those who would like to commit regularly, as well as tasks or activities for those that prefer to help on a more adhoc basis. Voluntary work is also valuable for building a CV, especially during or after a break from paid work, whilst studying, or during a gap year.

Jack Davies is taking on an absolutely incredible challenge for our charity - running 24 marathons in 24 consecutive days at Battersea Park in September to raise funds to support children heart conditions at our hospitals ❤️

He will also be raising funds for The Cricketers trust to support former professional cricketers who have suffered serious injuries.

Our heartfelt thanks go to Katie, Edwin, Joe and Charlotte, aka Team Katie, who raised £750 for our charity by climbing Scafell Pike ⛰️

Katie has a complex heart condition and had her most recent surgery at Royal Brompton Hospital a few months ago which makes her achievement much more special as she was determined to recover in time to take on this challenge.

Along with her mum Charlotte, she started Katie's Heart Appeal ❤️ which has raised almost £40,000 for The Brompton Fountain since she received her diagnosis aged 7. Alongside fundraising for our charity she (and her family and friends) has also gone on to raise thousands of pounds to fund Public Access Defibrillators in her local community. Katie is now 22, an NHS nurse and continues to smash her life goals 🎉

The prestigious Royal Parks Half Marathon is more than a 13.1-mile closed-road race through London’s beautiful Royal Parks. It is a powerful way to stand beside children with serious heart and lung conditions, and the families who love them through the most difficult moments.

Every mile you run and every pound you raise helps bring comfort, care, and a little more hope to young patients and their families. Your fundraising can help make hospital days feel less daunting and remind families that they are not facing this journey alone. We have guaranteed entry places for this year’s event which takes place on Sunday 11th October.

We are proud to fund more toys, crafts, distraction and sensory equipment, special bespoke treats and gifts, than EVER before. These are items for young patients across the whole network, including Royal Brompton, Evelina London Children’s and Harefield Hospitals.

We do this by working closely with the cardiac, respiratory and intensive care play team, who choose everything needed to ensure a child can have the best hospital experience possible. They pick the cot mobiles, the games, the activities and more - we fund them through our incredible donors and fundraisers. Thank you to everyone who helps make this happen ❤️💙

TAKING CARE OF CHILDREN WITH CARDIAC CONDITIONS DURING THE HEATWAVE ❤️☀️🌡🔥

For children with cardiac conditions, the key heat-wave priorities are hydration, cooling and activity restriction, because children with heart disease can be more vulnerable to dehydration and heat-related illness.

PRACTICAL ADVICE 💙

• Offer fluids regularly rather than waiting for thirst and keep water available during play.
• Avoid the hottest part of the day; plan outdoor time for early morning or evening and
prefer shade or cool indoor spaces.
• Dress the child in loose, light-coloured clothing, and use hats/sunscreen outdoors.
• Reduce exertion, especially vigorous play or sports, because heat stress adds extra
strain on the cardiovascular system.

WARNING SIGNS ⚠️

Watch for unusual tiredness, dizziness, fainting, nausea, vomiting, flushed skin, rapid breathing,
or a fast heart rate. If these occur, move the child to a cool place, start cooling measures, and
seek urgent medical advice; severe symptoms need emergency care.

HOME SET UP 🏠

Keep rooms cool with curtains/blinds closed in the day, ventilation at night, and air conditioning
or fans when appropriate. Make sure carers, schools, and relatives know the child is at higher
risk and should be monitored closely during heat waves.
