Our first lecture of our 2026-27 lecture series will be on London's Civil War Defences. It will be at 1830 on Tuesday October 13th at the UCL Institute of Archaeology, 31-34 Gordon Square WC1H 0PY. The talk will be delivered by Peter Mills and Mike Hutchinson.

During a 6 year period Mills Whipp Projects has undertaken a review of the Civil War defences of London. The research led to a radical revision of the locations of the forts, the site and morphology of the Lines of Communication between the forts and other aspects of the Civil War in London. These include the role of women, the dishonesty of the cartographers and the collective amnesia after the War. This talk will cover the latest research, and will focus on Westminster and south of the Thames.

Our last September LAMAS Late is this Monday 21 September at 1730 at Merton Priory Chapter House!

John Hawks, Vice Chair of Merton Priory Trust will give a talk about this English Augustinian priory founded in 1114 by Gilbert the Norman, Sheriff of Surrey under King Henry I (1100-1135). Come for a visit and look at the detailed exhibition.

We had LAMAS Late walks exploring the Old Kent Road with Chris Constable, Southwark Borough archaeologist, in August, and in Richmond Park last week with Andrew Mayfield, community archaeologist.

Why not join us for our last walk of the year at Merton Priory Chapter House with John Hawks? It is this coming Monday 21st September at 1730.

John Hawks has been intimately involved with the Chapter House since the major excavation of the Priory site by Scott McCracken and MoLA in the late 1980s. He is Vice Chair of Merton Priory Trust, and with an HLF grant managed the rebirth in 2018 of the Chapter House remains as a unique museum and community venue. Free to LAMAS members, but please bring some cash for a donation to the site.

There are still a few places available for Thursday's LAMAS Late walk! Details below ....

Our next LAMAS Late walking tour will be on Thursday 10 September at 1730 for 1.5 hours. Community archaeologist Andrew Mayfield will lead a guided walk around Richmond Park, focussing on some of the Lost Waterways of Richmond Park, from Tudor conduits to Victorian reservoirs.

Richmond is the focus of year one of a three year Lottery funded project to explore, survey and understand historic waterways and structures in Richmond, Greenwich and Bushy parks.

The 20 spaces on the tour are available to members only to book and are free.
