What happens when young people lead the research themselves?
This year’s Participatory Action Research project brought together 19 young people and 4 volunteer mentors to explore the impact of Breadwinners programmes across the UK. Together, they designed surveys, gathered feedback from over 1,000 community members, analysed responses, and shaped ideas for what comes next.
The insights were clear:
• Practical job support makes a lasting difference
• Community and mentorship matter deeply
• Young people want more guidance after graduation
• AI is already part of daily life and there’s strong interest in learning more
A huge thank you to Earlybird for supporting this work through technology that made the research more accessible, conversational, and inclusive.
Most importantly, this project showed what’s possible when young people are trusted to lead, question, and shape the future together.
