Knit for Peace

Knit for Peace We match knitters with good causes. We'll help you donate your knitting to people in need 🧶 So we set about finding outlets.

Here at Knit for Peace we believe that knitting (and crochet) is good for people. As well as being fun and therapeutic, knitting brings people together and gives a way of helping others in need, providing benefits both to the knitter and the recipient. Based on our experience of developing Knit for Peace over the last few years, we have learned that knitting is extremely important as an activity t

hat can be carried out right into extreme old age and helps improve long-term health, both mental and physical. Our policy is to encourage people to give, whether it is time or money. We now distribute regularly to outlets including hospitals, women’s refuges, refugee drop in centres, prisons, community groups, and hospices. We send the knitting (and crochet) to where it's needed. We also pass on donations of yarn and needles to enable people on low incomes to knit. The operation has grown organically, and we estimate we have over 22,000 knitters. Send your knitting to us and we will make sure that it goes to a good home.

We are enjoying learning more about Dan the Dinosaur enormously as he is such a huge part of our life at KFP HQ. Since discovering he was the work of Scottish artist George Wyllie, The Wyllieum has shared with us this archive article from 1990 from a BSL (British Sazoral Group) newsletter. Dan was made in collaboration with a BSL depot in Paisley. BSL supplies parts and components to the British army, they believe.

The article quotes the BSL depot manager John Smythe as saying that they supplied a David Brown 280 gearbox and Parvalux motor which enabled the head and legs to move. It was on its way south to the Museum Shop in Covent Garden when the photo was taken.

That his head might move was news to us, so we are hoping to have him repaired to see him in action!

Huge thanks to The Wyllieum for their information.

We've more information about Dan the Dinosaur!

He has kept guard over our knitting room for many years, after long service at the Museum Shop. Until now, we didn't know anything about his provenance, but a recent chance discovery has opened up information about his name and his creator.

He is Dan, made in 1990, by sculptor George Wyllie and engineer Harry Findlay.

We've been in touch with the Wyllie museum in Greenock and are excited to hear what their research may uncover.

We'll keep you posted!
