Last week our team in Georgia headed up into the mountains of Racha for four days of pop-up clinics.

Why Racha, you ask? Well, if you live there and your dog needs a vet, the nearest one is hundreds of kilometres away. That's where we come in.

By the end of day four, we'd neutered 100 dogs.

76 were family dogs, brought along by their owners (with our friends at NFA Georgia). The other 24 were roaming dogs, as we carried on what we started there last year.

That means fewer surprise litters, and healthier dogs for the whole village to live alongside.

On 28 September we come together to raise awareness about rabies - a zoonotic disease that can be effectively eliminated through mass vaccination.

This year’s World Rabies Day theme, is “Stronger Together” which is fitting for our work in Georgia. We work alongside the national and local authorities, local communities and animal welfare volunteers to help eliminate rabies in Tbilisi and across the country, through our dog population management programmes which include rabies vaccination for all dogs and cats.

Over the last three years in Tbilisi there has been a reduction in the number of recorded dog bites from both owned and stray dogs and a drop in the number of positive rabies cases in dogs and cats – in 2025, 2 cases in dog in the city from 115 dogs tested.

Vaccination works and reinforces the importance of a One Health approach, acknowledging the connection between human and animal health.🐾

Last week, Mayhew Georgia held a pop-up clinic in mountainous Kazbegi, Georgia, just 15 km from the Russian border.

Our team neutered and vaccinated 29 dogs, including three litters of puppies.

We also vaccinated and de-matted another dog, and had a lovely reunion with a dog we neutered three years ago. He had unfortunately suffered an injury to his front leg, which our team was able to treat.

This week we had the pleasure of meeting Vitsino at our clinic in Tbilisi. Vitisino had been a beach babe dog in Grigoleti going round all the holidaymakers on the beach asking for attention.

But she has now been adopted - no surprise there! She'll go to her new home neutered, vaccinated and in tip top condition. We wish Vitsino well in her new forever home! 🥰

Mayhew Georgia’s team have been busy again recently.

Last week, the team were in Ambrolauri where they neutered 93 dogs, both roaming dogs as part of our regional DPM programme and owned female dogs in a programme with the Ministry of Agriculture which helps to encourage responsible pet ownership.

It is common in the more rural parts for owned dogs to be let out to roam freely, which is one of the main causes of unwanted litters adding to the roaming dog population.

These are long, hard days for the team, but the cute dogs help! We think Ambrolauri currently has the prize for the cutest dogs! What do you think? 🐶

Recently, Mayhew Georgia's Head Vet, Dr Ana was in the town of Gori, Georgia, presenting at a workshop "A Safe City for People and Stray Animals" organised by UNDP Georgia and local CSOs under their Mayors 4 Economic Growth project.

The workshop was an opportunity for local residents to raise concerns and discuss ways of addressing them that will improve the lives of both dogs and people in the community. Thanks to the organisers for inviting us and for an engaging discussion!

Over three days in the first half of July, Mayhew Georgia delivered a pop-up clinic in one the more remote, mountainous regions of Georgia, where this is no veterinary provision for dogs and cats for several hundred kilometres.

In the small towns of Tsageri and Lentekhi and their surrounding villages, the team sterilised and identified 73 owned, female dogs under an agreement with the Georgian Ministry of Agriculture as well as nine roaming dogs.

These are long days, working in challenging conditions but the standard of care our team give to the dogs is always paramount. 🐶 💜

We were recently delighted to host a final year Vet student from Tartu University, Estonia via the Erasmus programme, at our clinic in Tbilisi for two weeks.

Carolina gained knowledge in small animal preventative health and welfare, TVNR programmes and community-based veterinary procedures.

She developed practical skills in animal handling, pre- and post-operative care, vaccination and assisting during surgical procedures.

She also strengthened her understanding of veterinary hygiene, biosecurity, and animal welfare, as well as her professional and cross-cultural communication skills.

Last year, our team visited Bakuriani to support dog population management efforts and following our post-intervention survey in September, we found that 88% of roaming dogs had been neutered.

This June, we returned to continue this important work. Over five days our team neutered and vaccinated roaming dogs and sterilised owned female dogs in a collaboration with Ministry of Agriculture.

🐾 58 owned female dogs neutered

🐾 69 roaming dogs neutered

🐾 2 roaming dogs vaccinated and identified as they had already been neutered

Following the intervention, Vito carried out another post-intervention survey. The results showed that 87.36% of roaming dogs were neutered - a very positive outcome, as it shows the roaming dog population has remained stable since last September.

This continued progress helps create safer, healthier communities for both dogs and people, while supporting a more sustainable approach to dog population management. 💜

Today is World Zoonoses Day, a chance to raise awareness of diseases that can spread between animals and people, including rabies.

In the first six months of 2026, more than 1,100 dogs have been vaccinated against rabies as part of our ongoing dog population management programmes in Tbilisi and the surrounding regions. 💜

Rabies is a preventable disease, and because the vast majority of human rabies cases are caused by infected dog bites, vaccinating dogs is the most effective way to eliminate dog-mediated rabies.

By protecting dogs, we're also helping to protect people - creating healthier, safer communities for everyone. 🐶🌍
