It's Volunteer Week!

Without our volunteers Positive East’s reach and presence within the community would be nowhere near as strong and consistent as it has been for over 30 years.

Our volunteers contributed around 7,715 hours last year to our HIV support and prevention services. Thanks to their dedication, programmes including our Befriending, Prevention and Testing, and Counselling Services, continue to reach more than 3,000 people every year.

Thank you today and everyday to our volunteers for making our work possible! ❤

Whatever time you can commit and skills you have - volunteer with us! Find out more through the link in our bio about how to get involved :)

Today is HIV Long-Term Survivors Awareness Day (HLTSAD).

This day also marks the anniversary of the first official medical report on what would become the HIV/AIDS pandemic. On June 5, 1981, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) published a Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR), describing cases of a rare lung infection in five young, previously healthy gay men in Los Angeles, California. At the time of publication, two of these men had already died. This is now widely accepted as the first published account of what would become known as HIV/AIDS.

Shortly after this article was published, we would soon bear witness to one of the strongest demarcations in modern history: what life was like before HIV and what life was like after its “discovery”.

We're at a tipping point in the history of HIV. While medical advancements have made significant progress, the social barriers surrounding HIV remain a persistent obstacle.

We have the tools and resources to be the generation that stops the onward transmission of HIV and its associated stigmas. We owe it to those who came before us and future generations. The fight is not over, HIV must remain on the agenda.

We're not done yet.

To mark the day we are hosting a HIV Long-Term Survivors Day event. It will be a chance to share your story with others, and for those who wish to tell their story on video. We’ll then make people’s contributions into a short film “Survivor Stories” which we’ll use for World AIDS Day in December. Find out more here - https://www.positiveeast.org.uk/events/month/2026-06/

Join our Theatre Workshop!

If you came along to our March 21st Wellbeing Day, you may have taken part in the theatre workshop with Eduardo Arcelus. Eduardo and his colleague Gabriele Uboldi told us that the workshop was ‘transformational’ in the development of their play “I dream of rabbits”. They’re back at Positive East to show how the work has progressed, with excerpts from the play, and a chance for further input.

They will be here on Wednesday 3rd June from 11am to 1pm. You don’t need to have come to the previous workshop to come along to this!

For further details or to let us know you want to come, contact Jack Summerside [email protected]

The UK AIDS Memorial Quilt is an integral part of social history, remembering a generation of loved ones lost during the epidemic in the 80s and 90s. Each individual panel commemorates someone who died of AIDS and has been lovingly made by their friends, lovers or family. All 42 panels of the UK AIDS Memorial Quilt are archived here at Positive East.

The UK AIDS Memorial Quilt Partnership, is a coalition of seven UK HIV charities, including Positive East, working together to find a permanent home for the UK Quilt, to conserve it and to ensure it is put on public display as often as possible.

This is panel 1 of 42

The panel commemorates the lives of Kevin, Ian, Peter, Gerald and Chris.

The quilt is a unique historical document that reminds us how far we have come in the fight against HIV but also that there is still so far to go.

What is the U=U Community Quilt?

Positive East collected thousands of photographs submitted from around the world—from London to Sydney, Gaborone to Sacramento—to celebrate the U=U message. These images come from people living proudly with an undetectable viral load, as well as allies who support and champion U=U.

The photographs are printed on fabric and arranged to form the powerful statement: U=U.

The project draws upon a visual medium and language that has deep roots within the HIV Community - quilting. Across nine community stitching sessions, 174 contributors dedicated more than 1,500 hours of stitching to transform 4,000 photographs into three expansive 6’ × 6’ quilt panels.

Each individual stitch reflects the diversity and resilience of our global community. Each individual image amplifies this message thousands of times, creating a collective statement that fully reveals itself only when every individual contribution is viewed together. A single blue square represents all those who are no longer with us.

The U=U Community Quilt has been crafted with the same love and care as the UK AIDS Memorial Quilt. It allows us to re-imagine the AIDS Quilt in the historic era of U=U, while contributing to a growing and diverse archive of visual and artistic responses to HIV.
