Our thoughts are with everyone affected by the powerful 7.4 magnitude earthquake that struck Colombia yesterday.

The earthquake was felt across large parts of the country. There are reports of damaged and collapsed buildings, fatalities, injuries and people trapped in collapsed structures, while the full extent of the damage is still being assessed.

HelpAge is in contact with colleagues and partners in Colombia as we seek to understand the impact on older people and emerging humanitarian needs. We are relieved that our colleagues are safe, and are closely monitoring the situation as assessments continue. Network members in Colombia are gathering information on needs on the ground and working towards initiating a response.

In any emergency, response efforts should ensure older people are included from the outset. That means access to safe shelter, healthcare, information and humanitarian assistance that is accessible and responsive to their needs.

We stand in solidarity with affected communities and remain committed to advocating for an inclusive response that upholds the rights and dignity of older people.

This week in our series, we are highlighting the work of HelpAge Moldova and its efforts to strengthen digital literacy across different communities in the country.

Through a series of workshops, older people took centre stage while younger generations also joined the conversations, creating opportunities for intergenerational learning. Together, participants explored how to verify information, identify AI-generated content, and protect themselves from digital scams with the support of journalists, trainers, and media literacy experts.

Initiatives like this not only help build safer and more informed communities but also demonstrate the value of bringing generations together to navigate an increasingly digital world.
