People want stronger local ties. Even though many feel community ties have weakened, 1 in 3 people actively want to improve their local connections.

Disconnection isn't a choice. Those who feel connected are less lonely and more satisfied. Those who don't are actively looking for ways in.

Connection is something we all need - and want. We just need to build the social infrastructure to make it possible.

Many people want to connect with their community - but are struggling to. What’s stopping them?

Financial hardship is a major barrier to connection. 59% of those who are financially comfortable feel connected to their community. Just 26% of those who are struggling financially feel the same.

Anxiety and digital fatigue hold young people back. 38% of 18–24-year-olds cite anxiety or a lack of confidence as a barrier to connecting. Compared to just 6% of over-75s.

Connection and loneliness are not experienced equally.

To change this, we need systematic support. That’s why we’re calling for a Cross-Government Action Plan on Loneliness & Connection.

Abuse towards people in public life impacts staff as well as politicians. The findings of the Parliamentary Staff Wellness Working Group's (WWG) survey are shocking. Many of the findings and recommendations align with our Jo Cox Civility Commission, including the need for MPs' improved compliance with security arrangements to protect themselves and their staff --- and, as such, our democratic institutions.

Connected communities support one another

Connection creates a safety net: 34% of Britons see help in times of need as one of the biggest benefits of community connection.

Feeling connected means knowing you aren't facing hardship alone: 76% of people who feel connected would turn to a neighbour for company when lonely. Just 16% of disconnected people would do the same.

Abuse and intimidation towards elected representatives is a threat to democracy.

Since 2023, we've been leading the way to address this through the Jo Cox Civility Commission. It's seen us working across sector and across the political spectrum to educate and inform people about the problem and propose tangible solutions.

While we've made some progress, there's still much more to be done.

The strength of our country rests on a sense of belonging.

Our democracy depends not only on formal institutions, but on the trust, relationships, and collective purpose that connect our communities.

That’s why we’re calling on the Prime Minister to prioritise three key areas:

1️⃣ Making politics work again by tackling abuse and intimidation in public life.
2️⃣ Prioritising social connection and community power by treating social infrastructure as critical national assets.
3️⃣ Establishing a Cross-Government Action Plan on Loneliness.
