Trees for Cities is the only independent charity working on a global scale focussed entirely on planting urban trees, inspiring children to grow and eat good food and providing volunteering opportunities to bring local people together. Our vision to plant trees in cities is global. However, we know the importance of a local focus – we empower and work with local people to strengthen their community. When was the last time you took a moment to notice the nature on your doorstep? 🤔

Feeling connected to the natural world doesn't have to mean venturing deep into the countryside. Nature is all around us, from the urban trees lining our streets, to the wildflowers pushing through cracked pavements, to the greenery growing in our gardens, parks, and neighbourhoods.

Taking the time to slow down and really appreciate your surroundings can have a HUGE impact on how you feel. Try picking a tree you pass every day. Look at its bark, leaves, flowers, or the birds and insects that call it home.

In fact, why not challenge yourself to spend half an hour outdoors a day for a week? Close your laptop, put your phone on silent, and see how you feel.

But it's not just about how many trees we put in the ground. It's about how we're keeping them healthy, and who's helping us do it.

Here’s what your support helped us achieve in 25-26…

🌱 97% establishment rate for standard trees after three years
👫 25,310 people engaged in our movement for urban trees

Huge thanks to Aaron Paul at BBC Radio London for having us on the show earlier this week. Our Senior Urban Forest Coordinator, Georgie Power, spoke about the challenges London's trees are up against, and how we're adapting our planting strategy in the face of a changing climate.

A recent report published by Kew Gardens and the Greater London Authority revealed that of 1.2 million of the capital's trees assessed, a staggering 72% may struggle to withstand the hotter, drier summers and warmer, wetter winters set to hit the UK in years to come.

But that's exactly why this work matters: it means we know where to focus, and we can continue to plant the RIGHT trees in the RIGHT places.

Brilliant to see BBC London putting the need for climate-resilient planting in the spotlight this morning in the wake of London’s extreme heat and ongoing drought.

This summer's prolonged dry weather has put real strain on our urban trees, especially those yet to become established. Without extra watering, mulching, and monitoring, many won't survive their first few years.

Our Chief Executive, Kate Sheldon, joined BBC London’s Tom Edwards at our Hillingdon planting site to highlight what we’re doing to save young trees in the capital and beyond.

Here's what you can do to help:

Recent showers don’t spell the end of the drought.

We’re certainly enjoying the cooler weather, but the trees will need more than a drop of rain and a dip in temperature to recover from the hottest summer on record, according to the Met Office.

It can take months for trees to bounce back, but the good news is this: there’s something you can do about it ⬇️

Think you know your trees? 👀

Meet the Judas tree (A.K.A. Cercis siliquastrum)

Prized for its ornamental value, the Judas tree is emerging as a drought-resilient alternative to ornamental cherry (Prunus) species, many of which are struggling as our climate grows drier and hotter. The species also makes a great addition to gardens and smaller urban spaces.

To ID this tree, look out for:

🔍 Vivid pink blossom, often growing straight from the bark
🔍 Purplish seed pods
🔍 Large, kidney-shaped leaves

🌧️ The rain has come (at last!), but the drought is far from over.

After months of unprecedented heat, a few showers won't reverse the damage. For young trees especially, full recovery is a long way off.

The good news is this: there’s something you can do about it!
