Trees for Cities

Trees for Cities Making trees matter where they're needed most 🌳💚 Our vision to plant trees in cities is global.

Trees for Cities is the only independent charity working on a global scale focussed entirely on planting urban trees, inspiring children to grow and eat good food and providing volunteering opportunities to bring local people together. However, we know the importance of a local focus – we empower and work with local people to strengthen their community. We are a game-changing, ambitious organisation which sets the standard for urban tree planting worldwide.

It all starts with you!

As our Chief Executive Kate Sheldon shared at a corporate volunteering day yesterday, it’s volunteers who make the real difference — from corporate groups to local communities, and those who’ve grown their skills to lead others.

Thank you for being such a vital part of our journey 💚

This Volunteers' Week, we’re celebrating the people behind the trees...

In the last year alone, over 2,000 fantastic volunteers have come together to help us green towns and cities up and down the country 🪏🌳

It’s always a joy seeing so many smiling faces at community planting events — particularly knowing that for many in attendance (over 75% in the last 12 months), it’s their first time putting trees in the ground.

We can’t thank our volunteers enough for their commitment to making trees matter 💚

The Wood Wide Web 🍄🌳

Just one of the many wonders of trees! Through underground fungal networks, trees can share resources, send signals, and support each other through drought and disease.

With temperatures rising and heatwaves becoming more frequent, it’s not just people feeling the effects of extreme weather 🥵🌳

Urban trees are especially vulnerable during extreme heat. Cities can be significantly warmer due to the urban heat island effect, and young or newly planted trees often struggle.

To help trees establish, grow, and thrive, they need a little extra care during the summer months 💧

That’s why we’ve pulled together our top 5️⃣ tips for watering urban trees — simple actions that can make a big difference for your local environment.

Take action today and help keep our urban trees healthy and hydrated this summer 🌱

📢🌍 In the fight against global climate and nature crises, trees aren't always the loudest in the conversation — but they're one of the simplest, most cost-effective, and powerful nature-based solutions we have.

Yet so many neighbourhoods across the UK are missing out on the life-changing benefits they bring 🌳

We need your help to change that.

Huge thanks to the team at Earth Minutes for translating our mission into such compelling visual storytelling 🌟

Sir David Attenborough once said: “If children don’t grow up knowing about nature and appreciating it, they will not understand it. And if they don’t understand it, they won’t protect it. And if they don’t protect it, who will?”

His words ring true now more than ever, which is why our new organisational strategy focuses on community-powered climate action to help make sure kids across the UK grow up with access to trees and all the benefits they bring 🌳

With their iconic star-shaped blooms in shades of white, pink, and yellow, magnolias bring a welcome burst of colour to our streets each spring — though sometimes blossoming as early as February 🌷🌼🪻

The tree was named after French botanist Pierre Magnol, who was among the first to classify plants into families, and with its 200+ varieties, the name feels especially fitting!

What’s your favourite type of magnolia?

It’s Mental Health Awareness Week, and this year, the theme is ‘Action’.

One of Mental Health Foundation's top tips for good mental health is getting closer to nature — and we couldn’t agree more 🌿

All year round, we champion the powerful impact of trees and nature on wellbeing, helping communities feel calmer, more connected, and more hopeful. An action as simple as getting outdoors and planting trees together can make a real difference.

Here are just a few ways urban trees can support our mental health and wellbeing, brought to life through the beautiful words of volunteers at planting days kindly supported by the Bupa Foundation 💚🌳

Today, we’re launching our new organisational strategy: Make Trees Matter!

✨ Our vision?
Urban trees for all! Towns and cities where everyone can live healthier lives surrounded by thriving trees and nature.

🚀 Our mission?
Making trees matter for everyone so they’re valued, cared for properly, and given the resources they need, especially in places with the lowest tree cover.

🎯 Our goal?
Grow a movement for urban trees and tree equity, bringing people together to make sure every community, no matter their background or postcode, can benefit from the life-changing power of trees.

But we can’t do this on our own… will you help us make trees matter?

Read our strategy and join our movement for urban trees and tree equity 🌳
