A tiny mouse was spotted making use of the dead hedges at Sydenham Hill Wood by our Corporate Volunteering Officer, Aaron. ๐Ÿญ๐ŸŒฟ

Dead hedges are created from stacked twigs, branches and woody cuttings. Theyโ€™re a simple but effective way to reuse natural materials while creating valuable habitat for wildlife.

Despite their name, dead hedges are full of life. They provide shelter, nesting spaces and safe corridors for insects, birds, amphibians and small mammals helping species move through and thrive in the woodland. As well as being a natural way to mark pathways in the woods!

A lovely reminder that small habitat features can make a big difference for nature.

Ok, so we might not be getting a beaver or pigeon note this timeโ€ฆ but you can now have your say on which UK wildlife could appear on future Bank of England banknotes. ๐Ÿฆ”๐Ÿฆ‰๐Ÿ

The Bank of England announced in March 2026 that wildlife will be the theme for the next series of banknote designs.

Now, with the help of wildlife experts from across the UK, theyโ€™ve created a shortlist of native species that could feature as the central image on the ยฃ5, ยฃ10, ยฃ20 and ยฃ50 notes.

Your vote could help shape the final designs. ๐Ÿ‘€

Did you know scything allows for more precise meadow mowing - helping wildflowers thrive by preventing coarse grasses from taking over? ๐ŸŒพ๐ŸŒผ

Recently, volunteer Stuart and Walthamstow Ranger Lora attended a scything course at Braeburn Park, led by Mary Ellis of South East Scything.

Traditional meadow management techniques like scything can make a real difference for biodiversity, encouraging a richer variety of flowering plants and pollinators.

A huge thank you to Green Angels for funding the course, and to the Land Trust who own and fund Braeburn Park.
