For this staff pick Sunday, Helen recommends Enter Ghost, written by Isabella Hammad and narrated by Nadia Albina✨
💬 I just finished listening to Enter Ghost by Isabella Hammad and it was AMAZING. It was longlisted for the 2024 Women’s Prize and won the RSL Encore Award.
Set in 2017, the novel follows Sonia, a British-Palestinian actress who escapes London after a chaotic relationship to visit her sister in Haifa. What starts as a break turns into something unexpected when she’s pulled into a local production of Hamlet.
As rehearsals unfold, so does the political reality around them - restrictions on movement, rising repression, and the everyday tensions shaping life in the region.
The title (from a Hamlet stage direction) reflects the novel’s themes of memory, absence, and unspoken histories - something Hammad explores beautifully through deeply human, vividly drawn characters. Even the smallest roles feel memorable.
The audiobook narration by Nadia Albina is incredible, shifting seamlessly between accents and making the story feel immersive and alive.
It’s not always an easy read (personally and politically), but it balances heavier themes with warmth and humour.
⚠️ Trigger warning: child loss/miscarriage
