For 80 years, an RAF Lancaster bomber was believed to have vanished into the North Sea without a trace. But a handful of partially burned maps discovered in Germany may have uncovered a completely different ending to the story. Researchers now believe the aircraft crashed on land—and that its missing crew could still rest beneath a modern industrial estate. What began as a forgotten wartime mystery is suddenly raising haunting questions no one expected to answer.

RAF Lossiemouth is now Scotland's only RAF station and one of the most important military air bases in the UK. Home to the Typhoon Quick Reaction Alert force and the Poseidon maritime patrol fleet, it plays a vital role in protecting British airspace and monitoring activity across the North Atlantic.

Its story stretches back to 1939, when Wellington bombers first arrived at the station. During WWII, Lossiemouth launched missions against enemy shipping and was the departure point for the famous operation that finally sank the German battleship Tirpitz.

From wartime bombers and Jaguars to today's Typhoons and Poseidons, RAF Lossiemouth has remained at the heart of Britain's defence for more than 85 years.

Have you ever served at RAF Lossiemouth, visited the station, or have a connection to its history? We'd love to hear your memories in the comments.

October 2025 marks the 100th anniversary of the formation of the Royal Observer Corps. Join us to mark this historic occasion with ROCA 100 on Sunday 26 October.

Operational in the UK between 29 October 1925 and 31 December 1995, the ROC was crucial to the air defence of Britain, not least during the Battle of Britain, where nearly 32,000 volunteers - armed only with a tin helmet and binoculars - scanned the skies from vantage points to identify enemy aircraft. This vital information was relayed and filtered down to Group Headquarters, such as here at No. 11 Group - now known as the Battle of Britain Bunker - and would help inform the decisive decisions that would shape the course of history. Their significant role in the Battle of Britain was recognised in 1941, when King George VI granted them the title 'Royal'.

Our event on the 26 October will celebrate this often overlooked element of the Dowding System with a series of tours, talks, stalls, and object handling sessions, as well as crafts for all the family.
