National Opera Studio The UK's leading opera training organisation, providing training to singers and repetiteurs.

The National Opera Studio plays an essential role at the heart of British opera. The NOS is engaged by Arts Council England and the UK’s leading Opera Companies - English National Opera, Glyndebourne, Opera North, the Royal Opera House, Scottish Opera and Welsh National Opera – to provide professional training of the highest quality for singers and répétiteurs who have the potential to become the leading artists of their generation. The successful candidates are selected by the Opera Companies from hundreds of applicants. The training programmes for each artist, which are individually designed to meet their needs and aspirations, are provided by coaches who are the leaders in their disciplines. Young Artists also have regular opportunities to work closely with leading directors and conductors to prepare opera scenes for performance. The intensity of the training programme is designed to create a working environment that reflects the professional opera world. Many
NOS-trained singers have gone on to build successful careers at an international level. NOS-trained répétiteurs now work on the music staff of opera companies.

Announcing our 2026/27 Academy Singers 🥳

NOS Academy supports singers who demonstrate considerable vocal promise, but may have faced barriers in their development.

At our Studio in Wandsworth, each singer will receive dedicated musical and vocal coaching, as well as participate in movement, stagecraft, diction and audition classes. Further discussions will be offered on branding, online and social media presence, role preparation, CVs and professional materials, and mental health.

The Academy takes place over two focus weeks. October’s focus week is dedicated to the solo singer and April’s explores ensemble and stagecraft skills.

Our warmest congratulations to Brindley Sherratt, who has recently been named as The Grange Festival’s Artistic Director ahead of its 10th anniversary year. He succeeds Michael Chance, who held the position from the festival’s inception in 2016 until 2026.

Brindley has served on our Sounding Board since 2021 and has provided invaluable advice, masterclasses and coachings to the Studio as we continue to develop our offer early-career opera artists.

A world-renowned bass, Brindley continues to perform on some of opera's greatest stages. Tomorrow, he performs the role of Gurnemanz in Evgeny Titov’s new production of Wagner’s Parsifal at the Royal Ballet & Opera.

Join us to celebrate one of opera’s wittiest, touching and pure-genius composers, Offenbach.

The Opera Rara Salon Series joins forces with the National Opera Studio to delve into the music of Jaques Offenbach.

The National Opera Studio Young Artists will be joined by cast members of Opera Rara’s recent “Barkouf” recording, tenors François Piolino and Philippe Talbot to celebrate Offenbach’s extraordinary music and theatrical imagination.

The evening also features a pre-concert talk with music historian Flora Willson and conductor Paul Daniel.

Tomorrow marks our first external performance with our 2026/27 Young Artists.

The Young Artists are currently busy in staging rehearsals for Overture, a dazzling programme of opera scenes ranging from Puccini’s La Bohème to Simon's The Secret Garden. After a canapé and w**e reception, the performance will be hosted by acclaimed Scottish Soprano Marie McLaughlin, and followed by a drinks reception. Booking closes tomorrow morning - it’s not one to miss!

Later this week, the Young Artists and some recent alums will audition for UK opera companies including Garsington Opera, Longborough Festival Opera, Opera Holland Park, Grange Park Opera, The Grange Festival and Glyndebourne in our Summer Festivals Day. This is a fantastic opportunity for our Young Artists to gain industry exposure, and book contracts for the busy summer season.

Are you passionate about bringing opera to young audiences? Well this short course might be for you 🎶

Delivering Opera in Primary Education is a free, five-day intensive course at the National Opera Studio, in partnership with the Royal Ballet and Opera.

Combining CPD sessions, workshops, observation opportunities and experience in local primary schools, this course gives opera singers and repetiteurs the practical skills, confidence and knowledge to work effectively with primary-aged children.
