National Opera Studio

National Opera Studio The UK's leading opera training organisation, providing training to singers and repetiteurs.

The National Opera Studio plays an essential role at the heart of British opera. The NOS is engaged by Arts Council England and the UK’s leading Opera Companies - English National Opera, Glyndebourne, Opera North, the Royal Opera House, Scottish Opera and Welsh National Opera – to provide professional training of the highest quality for singers and répétiteurs who have the potential to become the

leading artists of their generation. The successful candidates are selected by the Opera Companies from hundreds of applicants. The training programmes for each artist, which are individually designed to meet their needs and aspirations, are provided by coaches who are the leaders in their disciplines. Young Artists also have regular opportunities to work closely with leading directors and conductors to prepare opera scenes for performance. The intensity of the training programme is designed to create a working environment that reflects the professional opera world. Many
NOS-trained singers have gone on to build successful careers at an international level. NOS-trained répétiteurs now work on the music staff of opera companies.

"You don't need to speak Russian to sing it beautifully. You just need to learn thirty-three letters."

Language coach and conductor, Lada Valešová introduces the Cyrillic alphabet. She explains that by learning the alphabet, and a couple of key rules, you’ve mastered half the challenge of singing in Russian - “learn the alphabet, and you open the door.”

BTS rehearsal shots from our Storytelling in Musical Theatre and Opera short course 🤩

Over the week, participants explored storytelling across both genres through coaching sessions in acting, movement, solo and ensemble singing.

We are deeply saddened to hear of the death of David Gowland.

David was such a generous, warm and supportive colleague, and a true champion for early-career artists. His dedication and care nurtured hundreds of singers, conductors, repetiteurs and directors. He leaves an inspirational legacy and is sorely missed.

After studying piano accompaniment at the Royal College of Music, David joined the National Opera Studio as a repetiteur in 1985 before embarking on his successful international career. A dedicated advocate for training early-career artists, David served as Artistic Director of the Jette Parker Artists Programme at the Royal Ballet and Opera since its inception in 2001, in which he nurtured the careers of over 150 young singers, conductors, directors and repetiteurs. Additionally, he coached artists across the world, including as a visiting coach at the National Opera Studio.

He passed peacefully on Sunday 9 August 2026, aged 63.
