The Simon Community

Living And Working With London's Street Homeless The Community was founded by Anton Wallich-Clifford in 1963 and is a registered charity.

Anton's vision for Simon was to reach out to the homeless and rootless, to be a movement of concern and, by working as a community, to offer a radical alternative to institutional care. We still follow that philosophy today, offering a variety of services for rough sleepers and other homeless people.

We would like to invite you to join us a funeral that will certainly be a celebration of the life of Alan Cole who passed away suddenly last week.

The service will be on Friday 25th September at 1pm at St Martin's, Gospel Oak.

It is with the heaviest hearts that we bring you the saddest news today.
Our Patron, Alan Cole, passed away suddenly last Sunday evening in Homerton hospital. We are all in shock and can't believe he's gone.
He lived his life right up to the end, he was at the Board meeting just a few days before he went to the hospital. He loved to be with people and he always showed up. It's hard to imagine a community event without him.
We don't have a date for the funeral yet, but as soon as we do we'll let everyone know. We will be coming together to celebrate his extraordinary contribution to the community in a way that we think he would enjoy, with friends, music, sausages and ice cream.
RIP Coley, we will never forget you ❤️

Maria's face cake!! We loved having Maria's lovely energy around the house and alongside our services this past year. She brought a lot of laughter and hard work to the Simon Community. She even ended her shift full circle to where she started- with a delicious lunch of homemade Chilean empañadas! We will miss her 💗

The Annual Picnic was a top notch one this year. It was a super relaxing afternoon- we had perfect weather, and a great turnout from our guests and many other connected community members. We say every year that it's the "best one yet" but we still mean it this year! Thanks to all who made it and brought the great vibes🌞

We said goodbye to Rob at a beautiful service on Tuesday. The community really came together to contribute to making it what it was, thank you so much to everyone. Fr Andrew, one of our Trustees, led the service, and we heard words from people whose lives were touched by Rob. He was fittingly carried in and out to Siousxie and the Banshees and Toyah.

We will miss our friend very much ♥️

We will be remembering Rob this coming Tuesday, July 7th. For those hoping to attend the funeral, here are the details:

Location: St. Martin's at Gospel Oak, nearest station Gospel Oak.
Arrival: Service starts at 11am, please arrive by 10:45
Service will be led by Fr Andrew Kwapong
Followed by a gathering with refreshments at the church

Alan's 80th was a lovely afternoon!

There was a stellar performance from the homeless ukulele band (songs requests called out by Alan), piano playing, a summery lunch buffet, fabulous fruitcake, an Alan quiz (yes he won), and most importantly, many friends! So nice to see so many familiar faces. Thank you to all who came by ☀️🥳🧁 (& excellent birthday shirt courtesy of !)

We are so sorry to be bringing you the saddest news…

Our friend Rob passed away last Wednesday evening after a short but very courageous battle with cancer. He was only diagnosed a short time ago, he did start treatment, but his body couldn’t take it. He was very well cared for by St John’s Hospice, he had lots of visitors and it was very peaceful at the end.

He had his own particular brand of philosophy that he would dispense on occasion if he felt that you needed it. He also had the most infectious laugh that we were lucky enough to hear at the house. Rob didn’t find it easy to live in community, but he showed up and he stuck around, right to the end.

Anyone who has been around the community in recent years will have met Rob. When we first met him he was sleeping in the park opposite 129. He came in to the winter shelter, and from there into the house where he stayed for 6 years before moving on to independent living in 2021. He visited us regularly and was at all the picnics and AGMs.

His funeral will be held at St Martin’s, Gospel Oak on Tuesday 7th July at 11am. This was the church where he came into the winter shelter 12 years ago. There will be a gathering after the service in the church and everyone is welcome.

RIP Rob, a true one off. We will miss you very much
