After a two-year closure, the Lord-Lieutenant was delighted to formally reopen the Old Police Cells Museum at Brighton Town Hall on Wednesday. The Lord-Lieutenant also serves as President of the Museum.

The Museum has reopened with a beautifully refurbished display, bringing to life the fascinating history of policing in Brighton & Hove.

The occasion was attended by the Mayor of Brighton & Hove, the High Sheriff of East Sussex, and the Chief Constable of Sussex Police.

The Old Police Cells Museum is located beneath Brighton Town Hall and offers a unique insight into historic custody conditions, policing practices, and local stories from across the decades.

On Friday, Alan McCarthy MBE DL represented the Lord-Lieutenant of East Sussex at the Seahaven Business Awards, held at the Amex Stadium in Brighton.

It was a fantastic evening celebrating the strength, resilience and diversity of businesses across the Seahaven area, from Seaford and Newhaven to Peacehaven. The awards highlighted the innovation and community spirit at the heart of businesses across this coastal area.

Congratulations to all the nominees and winners, whose achievements highlight the bright future for businesses in this well-connected part of the county.

On Saturday, the Lord-Lieutenant of East Sussex was privileged to present The King’s Award for Voluntary Service to Eastbourne Area Community First Responders. 🚑🏆

The event, held at the Grand Hotel, Eastbourne, recognised a remarkable team of highly trained volunteers who give their time to respond to medical emergencies — often arriving first on scene to provide potentially life‑saving care until an ambulance crew arrives. Their commitment, professionalism and compassion make an invaluable difference to people across the Eastbourne area.

The King’s Award for Voluntary Service is the highest honour given to voluntary groups in the UK and is often described as the equivalent of an MBE for organisations. It recognises the exceptional dedication of voluntary groups and the impact they have within their communities.

Warm congratulations to everyone involved in this thoroughly deserved recognition. 👏

Last week, The Lord‑Lieutenant was delighted to present Family2Family with The King's Award for Voluntary Service, recognising their exceptional support for families in need 👏

Through the dedication of their volunteers, Family2Family gifts new and used baby and children’s clothing, along with essential items, to families who may be struggling — ensuring children have what they need and parents feel supported at challenging times. Their practical kindness makes a real and lasting difference to families across the county and beyond.

The Lord‑Lieutenant was joined at the presentation by the Vice Lord‑Lieutenant, Mrs Kathy Sambrook OBE, and Deputy Lieutenants Jim May DL and Amanda Hamblin DL.

The King’s Award for Voluntary Service is the highest honour given to volunteer groups in the UK, celebrating those whose service has a profound impact on the lives of others. This recognition is richly deserved. Huge congratulations to everyone at Family2Family.

The Lord-Lieutenant was pleased to attend yesterday’s Mayoring Ceremony in Winchelsea, marking the formal appointment of Jurat David Page as the new Mayor of Winchelsea.

The proceedings began at the historic Court Hall, where the incoming Mayor took the oath of office before joining a procession to St Thomas’ Church.

The Lord-Lieutenant was delighted to join fellow civic leaders in celebrating this important moment. The ceremony was also attended by the Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports and the High Sheriff of East Sussex.

The Lord-Lieutenant offers his warmest congratulations to Winchelsea's new Mayor and sends best wishes for his term of office.
