Yesterday evening we enjoyed a lovely walk through Wapsbourne Wood, learning more about birds such as the Lesser Spotted Woodpecker that depend on Sussex’s woodlands and the simple management techniques that can help them thrive.
Joined by bird experts Dr. Ken and Linda Smith, and Mark Mallalieu, we explored the woodland while discussing everything from habitat requirements and deadwood to the challenges facing some of our most elusive woodland birds.
It was great to be joined by local landowners, community members and partners, highlighting the importance of working together to support nature recovery across the Lost Woods landscape.
A big thank you to Michael from Action in rural Sussex for guiding the walk.
Earlier this year, surveys in the Lost Woods area helped uncover exciting new information about the Lesser Spotted Woodpecker, one of Britain’s most threatened woodland birds. You can read our blog about it here - https://www.lostwoods.org.uk/post/lesser-spotted-woodpecker-survey-2026
The Lost Woods Project is made possible thanks to money raised by National Lottery players and The National Lottery Heritage Fund.
