Lewes Urban Arboretum, Trees Committee of Friends of Lewes Friends of Lewes Trees Committee: planting street trees and hedgerows in Lewes for their biodiversity and ecosystem values.

Lewes is recognised by ArbNet as an arboretum town! Some time ago Friends of Lewes received a bequest to fund the planting of trees in Lewes. This gave the late Paul Milmore the idea of creating a "Lewes Urban Arboretum" consisting of existing tree stock in the town along with additional plantings. Our vision is to change the way we look at Lewes: not trees in the town, but rather a town in the trees. This project is managed by the Trees Committee of Friends of Lewes.

We were joined by nine of The NatureLinks group and three members of the Railway Land Wildlife Trust team today for our second work experience session at Malling Deanery Arboretum. Everyone worked very hard and their tree care has made a positive difference. Three of us were clearing around this Ilex latifolia, a rare and unusual Holly. Hopefully the before and after pictures show the difference! We saw that the berries are turning red for the first time.

We were in Malling Deanery Arboretum and at The Pells today to measure trees for our tree inventory.
Here are some of them: Quercus frainetto, Hungarian Oak, 64.7 cm diameter; Fraxinus angustifolia, Narrow-leaved Ash, 72 cm diameter; Betula x Koehnei, Hybrid Birch, 32 cm diameter.
