We’re delighted to welcome three Master’s students from University of Sussex who will be carrying out research projects at the Railway Land over the coming months.

Their work will build on the remarkable research of Peter Hodge, whose 40 years of data collection on water beetles in the Railway Land’s water meadows is believed to be the longest longitudinal dataset of water beetles anywhere in the world.

The students will be analysing this unique dataset to better understand long-term ecological change and biodiversity within the reserve. Their findings will help shape the development of new learning materials, as well as support the creation of a citizen science process and monitoring protocol that will allow more people to engage directly with ecological research at the Railway Land.

The projects will also continue conversations sparked through our Voices of the Wild conference, exploring connections between ecology, language, learning and public engagement with nature.

We’re excited to support the next generation of researchers and look forward to sharing updates from their work throughout the year!

Tiny architects of the ditches!

These cased caddisfly larvae were captured during pond dipping sessions with schools at the Railway Land this week. These fascinating insects build protective cases around themselves using materials from the water like tiny stones, sticks, leaves and sand, all held together with silk they produce themselves.

The cases help camouflage them from predators and act like portable armour while they grow underwater before emerging as flying adult caddisflies.

A brilliant way for young people to get hands-on with freshwater ecology and discover the hidden wildlife living beneath the surface 💧

Helen was invited to the MOTH Festival of Ideas with some of our collaborators at the University of Sussex, a gathering exploring the growing global movement around more-than-human rights...

Bringing together voices from science, law, philosophy, activism and the arts, the Festival explored how we can rethink our relationship with the natural world and recognise the interconnected wellbeing of people, wildlife and the wider web of life.

The conversations felt deeply connected to the work we’re building here at The Railway Land – embedding nature-centric decision making into our work and embracing more ecocentric ways of speaking about, relating to and caring for the living world.

BUNNIES! 🐇🌿

Have you spotted any on the reserve?

Rabbits are most active in spring and early summer, when young kits begin emerging from their burrows – female rabbits, called ‘does’ produce one litter of between three and seven babies every month during the breeding season – that’s a lot of little ones!

‘Together in the Chalk Hills’ by Maddie Lock

This beautiful film captures the stories, histories and deep connections held within the Eastbourne Downland landscape. 🌿

Created as part of the Downland Art Trail for the Changing Chalk Project, the film brings together voices, memories and reflections inspired by Butts Brow – a place shaped by nature and people over thousands of years.

Here, Katherine Buckland shares fascinating insight into the fossils and ancient history hidden within the chalk hills beneath our feet.

Tap the link in our bio to watch the full film and experience this glorious landscape through the eyes of the people who know and love it most!

Part of Changing Chalk: connecting nature, people and heritage. Led by the National Trust supported by The National Lottery Heritage fund.
