Sussex Community Foundation

Sussex Community Foundation We bring inspirational people together to create the change Sussex needs. Together we’re helping to create a Sussex where people and communities thrive.

Philanthropists & investors, leaders in businesses & communities, volunteers & founders. We make it easy for Sussex people to give money to the local causes they want to support and ensure that those donations reach the people that need them. Since 2006, we've raised £22 million for Sussex communities. We've given over 3,000 grants totalling £23 million to over 1,500 charities and community groups

. Most of the grants we give are between £1,000 and £5,000 which make a big difference to the groups that receive them. We manage funds of money on behalf of Sussex philanthropists and are building a permanent endowment fund that currently stands at £24 million that will benefit Sussex people for generations to come.

It was a pleasure to learn about the Lewes Fund from its Chair, Richard Pearson.

Over the last 15 years, thanks to the generosity of local donors, they have given out grants to over 50 local community groups totalling over over £200,000!

Their mission is to help reduce disadvantage and build a stronger, sustainable community for the future, in Lewes and surrounding parishes.

If you are an not-for-profit organisation working in this area and looking for funding, do consider submitting an application for funding. Their next round closes mid-September.

In 2018, Hannah Powell started Family2Family from her conservatory with a simple mission: to make sure children across East Sussex had the clothing and essentials they needed. 💙

That same year, the charity received its first Sussex Community Foundation grant. Today, Family2Family has grown into a county-wide service supporting families across East Sussex.

Hannah's story is the first in our 20 Years, 20 Voices campaign, celebrating the people who have shaped Sussex Community Foundation over the past two decades.

More than 1,400 children are currently living in temporary accommodation in Brighton & Hove.

Last week, we were delighted to support Justlife and IMEX at the Brighton & Hove Homelessness Fund Showcase and Pledge Event, bringing together businesses, charities and philanthropists to explore how we can work together to tackle homelessness in the city.

The event showcased the incredible organisations already making a difference and highlighted the importance of collaboration in creating lasting change.

Today, new UKGrantmaking 2026 data reveals that more than 14,000 grant makers distributed £24 billion in grants across the UK in 2024–25.

The report shows that grant sizes are increasing and large awards are becoming more concentrated. Yet we know that smaller charities and community groups continue to play a vital role in supporting people and strengthening communities.

At Sussex Community Foundation, we've seen first-hand the difference that local, responsive funding can make. Understanding the needs of places and the organisations rooted within them remains essential to ensuring support reaches the communities that need it most.

💚 It's .

This week (and every week!), we're celebrating the small charities and community groups that make such a difference across Sussex.

Whether they're tackling loneliness, supporting families, improving mental health or creating opportunities for young people, small charities are at the heart of our communities.

As we celebrate 20 years of Sussex Community Foundation, we're proud to have supported more than 3,500 local organisations and to witness the incredible impact of local giving every day.

To every charity, volunteer and community leader in Sussex – thank you.
