An important part of the role of an End of Life Doula is not only supporting individuals and families one-to-one, but also helping to open up conversations around death, dying, grief, and caregiving within our wider communities.
A wonderful example of this was York’s Dead Good Festival, which took place across the city from 8th–17th May, including 3 full days hosted by St Leonard’s Hospice, York Explore Libraries, and York Cemetery. The festival brought people together through a diverse programme of talks, workshops, music, creativity and community events, all encouraging more open, compassionate and imaginative conversations about mortality and remembrance.
We’re especially proud that this year’s festival was organised by three of our End of Life Doula UK members, working collaboratively alongside the wider organising committee. We also loved seeing our members contributing to the programme through talks, creative workshops and music performances that shared knowledge, encouraged reflection, and supported connection.
Community events like this play such an important role in helping to reduce fear, isolation and stigma around death and grief, while reminding us that these experiences belong to all of us.
Thank you to everyone involved in creating such a thoughtful and meaningful festival, we look forward to joining you again next year.
