End of life doulas offer compassionate practical, emotional, and (if requested) spiritual support during times that can feel emotionally and logistically overwhelming.

This testimonial, received about one of our members, highlights the person-centered and human approach of end of life doulas, also illustrating the extent of their impact on emotional and psychological wellbeing.

End of life doulas recognise that caring is never experienced in isolation. It affects a whole family and the wider circle around them, which is why building carer-friendly compassionate communities matters.

Alongside supporting the person who is dying, doulas provide space for carers to feel heard and held as they navigate the emotional and practical realities of caring. That support might look like gentle conversation, respite presence, or simply taking a moment to pause together with a cup of tea.

This Carers Week, we honour those supporting someone at the end-of-life and the importance of communities that don’t just rely on carers, but actively support them too.

"Being invited to support people at a tender time feels like such a privilege… and feeling like I'm making a difference is important to me,"

Our member and end of life doula, Ruby Love and CEO Dr Emma Clare have been featured in another BBC article exploring the growing role of end of life doulas in the UK.

Ruby shares her experience of providing person-centred support to people who are dying and those important to them, while Emma highlights the important role doulas play in complementing health and social care services through practical, emotional and relationship-based support.

We're grateful to Ruby for sharing her story and helping raise awareness of the valuable work end of life doulas do every day.

An important part of the role of an End of Life Doula is not only supporting individuals and families one-to-one, but also helping to open up conversations around death, dying, grief, and caregiving within our wider communities.

A wonderful example of this was York’s Dead Good Festival, which took place across the city from 8th–17th May, including 3 full days hosted by St Leonard’s Hospice, York Explore Libraries, and York Cemetery. The festival brought people together through a diverse programme of talks, workshops, music, creativity and community events, all encouraging more open, compassionate and imaginative conversations about mortality and remembrance.

We’re especially proud that this year’s festival was organised by three of our End of Life Doula UK members, working collaboratively alongside the wider organising committee. We also loved seeing our members contributing to the programme through talks, creative workshops and music performances that shared knowledge, encouraged reflection, and supported connection.

Community events like this play such an important role in helping to reduce fear, isolation and stigma around death and grief, while reminding us that these experiences belong to all of us.

Thank you to everyone involved in creating such a thoughtful and meaningful festival, we look forward to joining you again next year.
